Hi Folks, been given two lenses from my Dad's old slr.:thumbs: I assume they're ok for DSLR (I'm looking to get a 40D body). They are both Canon EF Lenses. Could anyone give me an idea of what each lens will be useful for?:shrug: The first is a 35-80mm f/4-5.6 and the second is a 100-300mm f/4.5-5.6 Thanks in advance.
 
The first one should be OK for general walk-around shooting. The longer one maybe for sports or wildlife, though the f4.5 aperture will be a bit restrictive, you would need to use a high ISO to get fast shutter speeds.

There have actually been three versions of the 35-80 (all f/4-5.6).
The first version was the PZ or Power Zoom...had a couple of buttons that allowed you to zoom in and out buy pressing them :shake:
The next feature the micro-motor (a small DC motor) and finally the USM model released in 1992

Thanks for the info guys.:thumbs: They are both USM lenses. My Dad is also sending another 2 lenses - result!! :clap:One is a 18-55mm (kit lens I think) and another medium zoom type. Not sure what the f-stops on theses are yet but I'll probably seek some more advice early next week.
 
Got my two additional lenses today :thumbs: The first is EF-S 18-55mm (a kit lens I presume) and the second is 35-135mm f1.4-5.6 So that's 4 lenses now in total and I'm wondering if these are a good mix or if there's any duplication. Is there any sense in having the kit lens and the 35-80mm? Also, what would the 35-135mm be useful for? Sorry for all the questions but i'm a complete beginner - I haven't even got my body yet (looking for a 2nd hand 40D)!! I suppose i'm pretty fortunate to have these lenses as a starting point. Anyway thanks in advance for any advice. Sam
 
Yes you do have some cros over of focal length lenses, I would get your body first, have a good play with what your dads sent you up and see which of the lenses you prefer to use and which are just left sat there.

As he seems to be a great dad and sending you these lenses, why not see if he can send you a body as well :thumbs::thumbs:
