Canon lens problem

Evening all :)

I've been happily using my 17-85 USM lens for a while, and today I got a few Err01 (clean lens contacts, which I did and it didn't help) messages while using it in the studio. Just before I'd noticed some harsh overexposure on a couple of images, and when I pressed the shutter the viewfinder flickered before the error message appeared.
Put my 28-105 on the camera and everything's working fine with that, so it's definitely the other lens.

Is this a common problem?

Try setting the lens to f/8, press the DoF preview button and look into the lens to see if the aperture stops down.....sounds like it won't be doing to me.

OK thanks. I'll try that today. If it helps it was at f/11 at the time?

I'm not a Canon user but I'm guessing you can update/reinstall the firmware?
Try that.

If that doesn't work then you'll have to have a look at sending the lens back.

By the way Laura, hi again! Remember me from Facebook/Jemma's cousin?
Sorry about the way I acted. Was really childish and there was nothing wrong with your photos.
I added you a week or so back you accepted and then removed me. I guess your still upset so I apolagize.

Your probably better than me with your knowledge of photography but if you ever need help or an assistant give me a shout.

It's a lens Adam, can't update the firmware on it. I've emailed some places about having it repaired but don't see the point if it's not repairable. I can just go lens shopping which is fun.

Well this is the thing, it was at f/11 when the problem arose, and it looked like it was flickering when I looked through the viewfinder. Is it terminal?

Yes, but some profiles within the cameras software may have corrupt. Causing it not to read the lenses software properly.
All lenses are different. Which is why you only have a problem with that lens.

Its still worth a try.

Not tried IS turned off, will do when I'm at studio later. Left camera there last night when I was in a rush.

Laura,

There's a quite frequent failure with this lens and it normally shows first at the wide end (17-45'ish). An internal ribbon cable fractures causing the aperture control not to work when the cable is flexed into a certain position. If the aperture works correctly with the lens at 85mm then I think you've got it :(

£120-£140 at an approved repairer should see it brought back to life.

Bob

I was shooting at the wider end when it happened. Will try it at various lengths today.
I only paid £200 for it so reluctant to spend nearly as much having it repaired.

It does sound like a stuck aperture. may not be that economical to repair. what is the going rate on one of these lenses second hand

Around what I paid for it. Seen one on here for £200 so may just buy that.
