Canon lens question

Just wondering if people would expect a canon 24-105mm L series lens (set at 50mm) to be sharper and generally take a better picture than a 50mm f/1.8 STM at say an aperture for f/5.6?

I need to run a comparison, just interested if anyone has done anything similar?
 
Personally, I wouldn't.

I would expect to struggle to tell which shot was taken with which lens at 50mm F5.6
 
...on the other hand I would expect the 24-105 be better!

Much nice bokeh on the 24-105L, it is sharper (MUCH sharper and nicer in the corners on FF than the 50mm f/1.8 mk2, especially at wider apertures) and for the same given shutter speed, the excellent IS might help give you a sharper shot as any camera movement would be dampened.

I might run a test when I get back later to see how it comes out.

Interesting...

I am going to a christening today and I would normally take my 70D (so not full frame) with the 24-105mm and a grip, but I was thinking it would be considerably lighter and possibly as good with the 50mm lens and no grip.

Decisions decisions....
 
I can't imagine they would be much different. 24-105 has the advantage of being an L lens, but 50mm had advantage of being a prime (i.e. would generally be sharper than a zoom). However as you lower the aperture you will be unlikely to tell much if any difference. What did you comparison tell you?

I would have personally gone with the zoom to give me more flexibility
 
I used both in the end - Have not looked in detail, but both lenses took images that I am happy with!
