I was out in Rome the other week and all of a sudden my lens/camera started to play up.

I've got a Canon 40D with a Canon 17-85mm zoom

I found the camera would take a couple of shots and then I got an error message (sorry can't remember the code as I'm at work, possibly 002?) saying the contact between the camera and lens was dirty. Tried cleaning it, same error.

A chum lent me a lens and that worked fine, put mine back took a couple of shots and got the same error. I'm sure the camera is Ok as it worked fine with the borrowed lens (thanks for lending it to me for the weekend Tim!)

So anything I can try before I get it looked at?

Any suggestions for someone to repair this?

Fixation or Lehmanns are both ok or Canon at Elstree seem to be the cheapest.
 
If you're within striking distance of Elstree, why not take it to Canon themselves. The industrial park they're in is easily reachable by car. You could also send it of course.

You;ve tried cleaning the contacts, so not a lot more you can do yourself.
I have read and heard stories of problems with the 40D doing this with certain lenses at random. Might not be the lens at fault.
 
Have you tried a freshly charged battery.....

From what I remember, the lens contact test is based on the volatge coming back from the lens. If the battery is having trouble, then the voltage drops in general and especially back from the lens - and the error code comes up.
 
I had a similar problem a few years ago, put in a new battery and it cured it, so grahams suggestion is worth a try.
 
If you're going to send it off for repair, send it directly to Canon.

I sent a lens to http://www.ajjohnstone.co.uk/ (listed on Canon's site) before and the quote for repair was ridiculous, whereas Canon charge a flat £102 for all repairs, including parts and service. I received regular text updates on the repair process, and I got the lens back very quickly.

Sounds like from the above though you might be able to sort it without going down this route.

I still hadn't got round to sending this off yet.

Changing the battery didn't make any difference.

My daughter has just got back from Uni with her 40D. The lens works perfectly on her body, likewise my body works perfectly with any other lenses.

Should I consider sending the camera and lens to be looked at or sell this lens and buy a another one (my daughter would be very happy to have this lens off me)?
 
personally would risk sending to Lehmanns, send it to Fixation or Canon at Ellstree :)

i sent mine to lehmans and they tried to charge me for work that did not need doing. ie: the IS unit
canon elstree do a fixed price repair on lenses. i thinks its £127 regradless of work needed including a service and they are very good
 
So does Lehmann's have a slightly tainted reputation now?
I've used them in the past and had good service but to be fair that was a long time ago.

cant quote on that BUT
i took my 100-400 there around 3 months ago. i left it with them, after 8 days i rang them and was told they had emailed me with a revised quote. i never received it. i was quoted for work a total of £350 and was told the imagae stabaliser had gone. i was not happy with the quote so i went back to get the lens from lehmans,
a member on here told me about a fixed price policy on lenses at canon elstree.
i rang them and got great customer service on the phone
i posted the lens to them, after a couple days they emailed me a quote.
yes they do a fixed price on lenses of £127 but they have to check that the faults are not self inflicted, the price included full service, replacing the friction ring and bearings, and replacing the IS unit
when the lens came back it was great, and a lot sharper,
oh and on the invoice it said IS unit checked NO FAULT FOUND.
so lehmans wanted more than double canons price and were charging for work that did not need doing,
well worth it

I wouldnt use them again.. I stil think I got ripped off for work that didnt need doing on a lens I ahve had from new and only used half a dozen times.. sent for calibration (no big deal even wiht new canon lens) and was presented with 350+ quid bill for replacement af whatever

Straight to elstree for everyhting from now on.
 
Having used Canon at Elstree I wouldn't go anywhere else.. As a CPS member I got a two day turnaround. Plus receipt of equipment is acknowledged by email and despatch as well. Canon also have fixed standard charges so you can get an idea of what it costs up front.

A phone call will get you the information as to probable costs.. ( if you do ring you need option 1).

its about time canon investigated the repair companys they use, and looked at what they are charging, including over charging
i meant to contact canon over this
i still got the estimate from lehmans showing work needed, and bill from canon with actual work that was required
