Canon lens serial number

I am selling a Canon 70-300mm lens on Ebay and was going to include a picture of the serial number to confirm date and location of manufacture. The only problem is I don't know where it is on the lens. Can anyone help please?
 
I dont think you can date non L lenses, I may be wrong though.
 
I have found a 8 digit number embossed on the outside of the lens. No different characters though. I'm unsure if this is the serial number?

Does anyone know how I can get the information which the serial number relates to?

Do you mean the 70-300mm IS or the standard 75-300mm? The 70-300mm IS doesn't have a serial number and the 75-300mm has the serial number embossed on the end where it attaches to the camera.

By the way, you do realise that the serial number does not tell you date or location of manufacture?
 
I didn't reaslise hence the posting. As Tom mentioned I think it may only be on the L series lenses.

It is the 70-300 IS USM
 
What you're after is a DATE CODE, which many Canon lenses have in addition to a serial number. But that lens doesn't.
 
Cheers Stewart. I've just checked ebay and they don't seem to be selling too well. I may keep hold of it for a while. Not sure yet?
