Canon lens serial numbers?

Where do i find the serial number on canon lenses? Are they the same as the Date codes or should I be looking for a different number?

two different numbers
date codes start with letters, typically UU9999, usually black writing on the black part of the base, so can be hard to read!
serial number usually on the silver part of the lens base

If you still have the original box the lens / serial number is printed on a sticker on the side of the box as well.
