Canon lens to Nikon camera?

There appears to be many adaptors allowing Canon cameras to have Nikon lenses attached, but what I can't find is an adapter (auto focus) for a Canon lens to fit a Nikon camera.

Is there some technical reason why such an adapter doesn't seem to exist? the reason for asking is I was considering fitting /trying out a Canon EF 100-400mm f4.5-5.6L IS USM lens to my Nikon D300

Yes Nikon do an 80-400mm lens but it is not a HSM lens only a screw drive and doesn't have a very good writeup. Nikon do a "prime" 400mm and a 200-400mm lens but price is out of the question.

Is there such an animal?????

Any hints-tips-advice welcomed

The nikon bayonet is smaller, so the adaptor would not be able to mount the larger EF bayonet at the right distance so infinity focus would be impossible (or you would need either expensive or quality degrading optical elements in the adapter to achieve inf. focus)

Also there aren't any AF adapters for any different manufacturers' mounts. All adapters are purely manual.

Why not get a 300 f/4 AF-s and a 1.4x converter? or a sigma 50-500OS.

Thanks for the info Adam that answers the question. I wouldn't touch that Sigma as I have just been reading users reviews and at the 500mm end from what I read it isn't that good. The Nikon 300mm f2.8 lens is around £4000 and well out of my price range which with the TC pushes up the f stop to about f4 so not a viable choice and the 300mm f4 costing £1000 with a TC goes up to f5/6.

One thing about Talk Photography you get nice fellow members like Adam who give sensible and sound answers to members like myself . Thanks again

Daugirdas is right, they made two versions I believe an "APO" and a "Telemacro" I'm sure the telemacro is the better choice of the two. I'm very impressed with my copy the image quality is excellent (in my opinion) even under heavy cropping. The AF is great, not as good as an L lens but who'd expect it to be? Cheap too, but check if it works at all apertures on nikon, I know it only works wide open on canon. Close MFD too (1.6m I think).
 
Nikon AFS 300 f4 and a 1.4x TC... gives you 420mm thats pretty usable.

Lets put it this way, I was shooting 200mph superbikes in the chucking rain, black as your hat last week and it didn't bat an eyelid...

Ok, so if you had a 400 2.8 it would be better, you could stick on a MkIII 2x and get 800mm at the same fstop, but thats like 6.5 big ones...

The big money starts with the 300 2.8 and goes onwards and upwards... they are lovely bits of kit, but very expensive. Probably better to hire them rather than buy them.

The 300/4 + 1.4x doesn't add up to much more £ than the 100-400, which is only f/5.6 at 400 anyway. It should be a bit sharper as well. This seems to be the best quality way of achieving a ~400mm lens on nikon in this price range.

The sigma is actually pretty good. It comes a lot closer to the 100-400L than you would think, considering it's whopping zoom range. Pull it back to ~400mm and images should be comparable to the 100-400, especially if you can stop down a bit to f/8.
