Canon lens upgrade

I would imagine its miles better it a L lens which is there pro lenses. I'm a Nikon man so don't know much about canon gear. The 24mm end isn't very wide on your camera its designed for full frame cameras.
 
I had the 24-105 on my 400D then on the 40D, but it only came in to its own when I got my 5D MKII. As Robert has pointed out 24mm (on a crop camera) becomes around 37mm and you'd probably find yourself wanting something wider.
I think the Canon EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM might be what you're after as an upgrade.
 
15-85 or 17-55 as an upgrade. If you don't need/want constant f2.8, take the 15-85, it's a better general use lens than the 17-55 and really very good.
 
The Canon 17-85mm is a rather ho-hum lens with CA and distortion at the wide end and IMVHO you'd do better going for a 17-50mm f2.8 from Canon, Sigma or Tamron.
 
Depends what you want and shoot. I use the 24-105 on my 50D and it's a brilliant lens, but I do have the 10-22 as a wide lens. Constant F4 and the IS works really well. I've handheld down to 1/8 easily with it.

The Ef-s 17-55 f2.8 is a great lens, but a little short at time as a walkabout, but a constant f2.8 is brilliant. The EF-s 15-85 is another to think about. Another great lens and covers the walkabout brilliantly. I bought one for my sons 600D and have tried it as well and it's a great lens. It is a f3.5-f5.6 range though.

Have a search for Kelso on here, and ask for a price on whatever you decide.

they have mentioned they want something better for landscapes.
 
Thanks for all the advice. After reading this thread and loads of reviews I think I will be looking at a 15-85 as the 17-55 is a little shorter than I'm after. How would the 15-85 compare to my 55-250 IQ wise, as I believe thats sharper than my kit lens?

Well actually they said: landscape, portrait and general walk about.

Landscape can be anything from really wide angle to telephoto. Portraits are good with 85-100mm range, so 50-85 on the crop camera. General walkabout is wide to medium zoom usually, so I believe the suggestions given were correct.

The 55-250 is a great lens for the money, but you'll find the better lenses blow it out the water for sharpness and colour. There's a certain pop.

Which kit lens have you got? I've got one of the old 18-55 plasticky ones and it comes into it's own at times, usually when I don't want to risk a more expensive lens ;)

It's an 18-55 plasticky one.
 
Don't discard it then, it's handy for all sorts of occasions. I've stuck it through the bars of a big cats cage on a photography day, chucked it on an old 400D body suckered to a car at speed etc. Plus it's pretty good at close ups. Worse case you can buy them for £30-40.
 
sorry to ask, what f: aperture does it go down to?

I too am thinking about upgrading from my Canon 18-55 kit lens that camewith my 500d.

But not sure if I should look at a Tamron or Sigma.. 17-50 etc.. but both have a f:2.8 across the range.

its F4 - 5.6 so f4 wide open un zoomed at 17mm and 85mm will be f5.6

It's f3.5 at 15mm and 5.6 at 85mm. I would've like to of gone for the 17-55 canon lens but it just isn't long enough for what I wanted. The constant f2.8 would be nice but my nifty fifty will give me a shallower dof so thought I would benefit more from the extra range.
