Canon Lens - Which one to keep

I have no FF bodies any longer. I used my 24-105 f4 zoom on the 5D2 it was used continuously for just about all my FF photography...I occasionally put the 70-200 on it.

However as its gone, my thinking is with the remaining crop bodies I may as well sell the 24-105 and keep the 24-70 2.8...My thinking is that with the 1.3 crop factor the 70 end will effectively be 91mm , I may as well use the fast 2.8 lens and let the other one go, even though it is super sharp.

Is my reasoning logical or would you keep the 24-105 and sell the 24-70.. I only have crop bodies now. I do not anticipate using a FF body for a while.

If it was your only lens then there might be an argument for keeping the 24-105mm for that little bit more reach but with the 70-200mm in your locker - I'd keep the 24-70 (for the f2.8) no question.

Obviously both lenses start at 24mm and both reach 70mm so you really need to decide how often you use the 70-105mm end of the 24-105mm and weigh up whether that little bit extra is of more value to you than the f2.8 of the 24-70mm and having to change to the 70-200mm for more length.

That said - you'd get a bit more return on the 24-70 than the 24-105 if money is a factor.

As you have used both lenses, keep the one that you like the most for the kind of photography you do.

Personally, I would stick with the 24-70.

I can't make my mind up which I would sell if I was lucky enough to have both.

I suppose another question to ask yourself, is do you need to sell one now. If not, why not wait 6 months or so and see if 1 lens is just not geting used and sat in the bag all the time -> then sell that one.

Or if you don't need to sell one, keep them both, so you've the best of both worlds.

This is my fear Chris, You are quite right, the 24-105 is great and I love it. The 24-70 is no slouch though and with the extra stop, its a fantastic lens.The 24-105 is lighter and has IS, however I do not use the IS.

I have never really been restricted with the f4 of the 24-105 and to be honest I need to look at my recent images and check which FL i have used the most. I will do that this weekend.

I like them both but I think the 24-105 just edges it. Not too sure if its just familiarity with it or something else.

I shoot portraits, Nursery, Junior Sport and Events(On-Site Printing)....Bit of an all rounder really. I'm have also taken a keen interest in the Motorsport section, maybe something for this year. No time for my own stuff which I also need to make time for.

Hi Andy,
I'm sort of stuck on the decision too, hence the post. I think your advice is excellent...keep them both for 6 months or so. I dont really need to sell them but I dont like to have kit sat there doing nothing..
The other point I should probably consider is that I have a back up lens should either fail on a job.

Thank you all for your points and advice... I will post when I eventually decide which way to go
 
It's a nice problem to have, isn't it - I had a 24-105, sold it and got a 24-70 to go with my 30d and 5d. Recently sold my crop body and got a 5d2 with 24-105, so have both, and am not sure which to keep - I miss the effective extra length of the crop body but also like the 2.8..
If I sold one I could use it towards another body, but which lens to sell, or which second body to buy....

However, although the lens is sharper than a sharp thing, I do want to change it next year for the 24-70L just for the speed. So if I was you I'd sell the 24-105L without a thought as the 70-200 fills in for it.

By the way, did you decide on which UWA lens to get for the 1D? I'm just not sure if I should get the 17-40L or Sigma 12-24. Be interested to hear what you went for.

Olly_k just got the Tokina 11-16 2.8 and having seen the video that he posted on my earlier thread, I think this may be the option I would choose.

I am taking my time on this choice as I dont see myself needing the UWA for a few months yet.

If I had to recommend a single lens for photography in general, IMHO i would say the 24-105 for a FF body....everytime !

Like Chris stated earlier to keep both is not costing me anything and thats nice :) :) :)

It'd be the one I'd get rid of and it'd be replaced with a wide angle or prime(s.)
 
I'd sell the 24-105, as you get to keep a 2.8 lens on your crop body. I found when using a crop body, I stopped down to f2.8 alot more than I do now on a full frame. For me the decision would be about dof, not reach, especially as you had a 70-200.

This is where I think I may decide to go.....I sold the 16-35 as it was not really any use to me at the wide end on the crop...Olly_k listed a link to a Tokina 11-16 2.8 review, it looks quite favourable..... I'm looking to do some room interior shoots so the Tokina will come in very handy. In the review on the reviewers MKiv the Tokina was good from 13 to 16, Too much vignette at the wider FL.

Still pondering...no rush just yet
