Have a Canon 70-300 IS USM lens.

Has anyone a Canon ef 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 do is usm and how does it compare.

I know the size of it is great for travelling.

Thanks.

never used it, but from all the reviews I read it not supposed to be as good, a bit softer too.

Generally the one you have gets a better rating I have found.

The DO is compact at 70mm. But it is not a small lens, it's heavy, expensive, and the regular 70-300 IS is better optically. I would stick with that!

If you want an upgrade, 70-200L 4 IS with a 1.4x extender is the way to go.

most people i spoke to about the DO lens say that the money could be better spent elsewhere. agree with HoppyUK, the 70-200mm f/4 IS is a killer lens.

I walked past jessops the other day and noticed that 70-300 USM IS was £480, but they sell 70-200mm f/4 IS L for £530 - I would so go for the 70-200 every time.

Yes Jim, you're right as well - I shouldn't have put "IS" on the 70-200

All I was trying to say is you could have a 70-200 L for not much more than a 70-300 IS USM

...made a bit of a hash of it I'm afraid.

Good points - well made.

I'll not write more till I've had more coffee

The price for that 'L' is amazing.

If only I could justify spending that much money :cuckoo:
