Canon Lens

Hello,

First post, hello people.
I have just bought a Canon 70-200 EF lens. I'm curious about why it has a switch on it to select its focal range. You can select either 1.2m to infinity, or 3m to infinity. What would be the practical use of this choice?

1. Faster focussing due to smaller range in which to hunt

2. Can't lock on to close objects if you're trying to photograph stuff further away (e.g. leaves in the foreground)
