Hi looking for some advice just purchased a second camera canon 400d XTI
never had a canon before so just need some help on what canon lenses will work on it

i notice there is a huge selection types AF EF EFS USM ect
i would like to retain full auto settings so dont want go out and spend a few hundred quid to find out i've lost some settings

been looking a sigma range on ebay

any advice please

It's easier than you think, Jim.

Any Canon EF or EF-S lens will fit your camera and will give you 100% functionality.
Any Sigma DG or DC lens will fit your camera (so long as it is a version which is manufactured with a Canon mount as opposed to a Nikon mount, Sony mount, etc.!) and will give you 100% functionality.

USM stands for Ultra Sonic Motor, which is Canon-speak for a fast and silent focussing mechanism with manual over-ride permanently available. Non-USM lenses will still autofocus on your camera, but not so quickly and not so silently, and if you want to focus manually you will need to click a switch on the lens.

HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor) is Sigma-speak for USM.
