What do people think of the 28-135mm EF IS USM lens? I'm thinking of getting one for portraits and candid shots. I have the 17-85mm but want something a but longer would you say the quality is as good as the 17-85mm?

Also what is the 75-300mm like? I want to replace my 70-300mm sigma as it's not very good it hunts alot and I find it quite soft. Would you say the canon would have better optics?

So don't even bother with those lenses at all.

70-200 is mega bux! I'll keep my eye out for a bargain!
 
I agree with the other guys the 70-200mm F4 (either with IS or without IS) is a cracking lens and can be picked up second hand for £400-450 withouth to much trouble. I own one and love it.
However if thats a bit pricy for you have a look at the 55-250mm IS, its about £160 new from ebay sellers, lots of people who cant remortgage to fund glass find they give great results ;-)
 
Yeah, I agree with the 70-200 L. I picked a mint second hand for £385 and at first I bought it just off recommendations and I always wondered when I'd use it.... The fact is, I use it whenever I can and even force it by walking further if necessary... Superb feel to it and well worth the addition to the credit card :-)

These seem to be budget or mid range lenses and people here seem to be recommending a L lens that's over £500 so maybe the first thing to do is set a budget that you're willing to spend?
 
Go for 70-200, I had one for a month, and just can wait to keep shooting with it, very sharp, I would like the IS but ....one step at a time...now I need advise myself to replace my 18-200 to and L class to cover the wide side.

I would recommend the 15-85 (non L). It's got the best range to complement a 70-200 and according to reviews it's apparently up there with L IQ.

For me, the L 17-40 is too limited and you would miss an important gap.
 
Yeah that is where my gap is now, I really really need the 24-105 f4 L but they are just so expensive, I have even traded up my wife's Tesco vouchers to Jessops vouchers to add to my available funds.

I'm going to echo the sentiments of some if the other guys and highly recommend the 70-200mm f4L. I upgraded from the 75-300mm, and like you i thought "damn, that's pricy". I don't regret it though, the difference is like night and day
 
OMG - Jessops are on Tesco points?!!! Vrooom - that is me dashing off to find my vouchers and spend, spend, spend!

But I can't decide on the Canon 70-200 f4 or the Tamron 70-300...

70-200mm f4L, any day of the week. Even sunday mornings when I'm often asleep!
 
Matt, I also have a 40D which is a great camera, but at 10mp it cannot get the best from L series lenses. I have many budget lenses that give great results on my 40D, but on a 7D you can start to see their limitations. So if, like me, you don't intend to upgrade your body in the near future you will get good results from mid range lenses. I would suggest you keep the 17-85mm and buy a 70-300mm USM IS if you can afford it. If money is tight then go for 55-250mm IS. Both those lenses will pair well on a 40D. If you start to look at reviews or tests check out what camera they are testing the lens on, it does really make a big difference.

Are you sure? :thinking: I had my 70-200mm f4L on a 400D before getting the 7D, and let me tell you the difference in image quality, focus speed and build quality was enormous, compared to the 75-300mm I had before.

The 75-300mm is not good and even a 40D can't make it look average. The 70-200mm f4L would have made an enormous improvement, but not a lot more than the lenses I mentioned. The 40D is a great camera, but 10mp doesn't get the best from a 70-200mm f4L. That is the best Canon lens and gives it's full potential at 15mp and above. If I was going to upgrade my body that is the first lens I would buy, but I have tried one on my 40D, it is good, but shows very little improvement in IQ over mid range lenses (I don't class a 75-300mm as anywhere near mid range).
 
I want something that is good IQ and also which will be great for portraits and also with a zoom so I can add extension tubes or macro lenses on to get some macro shots.

I think I may save up for the 70-200 L f/4, I dont see the point in spending half the money on something which is only mid range when I can save a bit more and get Pro quality which I can then use on any future bodies plus it holds its value incredibly well.

Any other lenses you guys can recommend?
