hi, im wondering what a good alrounder lens would be for a 50d.
i currently have the kit lens (dont use), and also a 28-135mm is usm which i love but its the only other lens ive used apart from the kit lens...

i also have a birding lens (sigma 135-400mm) which i will be upgrading when to 100-400 when budget allows..

what im after is a really sharp lens for portraits and also im after a landscape lens and macro lens too. as i dont know what im looking for im after a bit of advice:thinking:
can i get 1 lens all rolled into one?? or would a landscape lens have to be seperate? I:E 10-20mm??

budget wouldnt be great but would like some suggestions on good value for money and i dont mind second hand, also could you say how much i would be expecting to pay for each lens as i dont want to get robbed..:)

i should be able to get £200 for my kit lens and 28-135mm so this would contribute and i could probably put in £300 aswell..

regards wes.

You are not going to get an all round lens for all three types of photography.
For macro you will need a dedicated macro lens such as the Canon 60mm or 100mm lens.
Depending how wide you wanted to go for landscapes the Canon 17-55 IS f2.8 would fit the for doing these and also portraits.
It's a very sharp lens but it is also the most expensive EF-S lens as well.
Another good option but cheaper would be the Tamron 17-50 f/2.8
It's a matter of personally choice and for me the 10-22 is my landscape lens.

£500 is not going to get you both lenses.
The Canon 17-55 goes for around £550-£600 2nd hand, the Tamron 17-50 around the £250 mark and the Canon 10-22 £450 - £500.
I can't help with the Macro lenses as I've never paid any interest in them.

I reckon you might roll the portrait and macro into one especially, and I'd recommend this, you do the zooming with your feet and grab a prime. John

How about a used 24-105mm L?
For landscapes you'll want wider, so look at the Canon EFS 10-22mm, again used.

A used 24-105mm L and a used 10-22 will still be out of his budget.
However, I own both these lenses and am very happy with them.

Have just picked up a 16-35mm f/2.8 L II, literally had it 5 mins so enough time to fire a couple of shots at random things. First impressions are WOW but will post again when played more. It's going with me to Japfest this weekend so will post some shots up next week :D

Nothing at all lol... Was talking to one of our customers at work about cameras and explaining I couldn't wait until payday to grab a 10-20, he knew I was going toa car show this weekend so offered a lend of his. Popped around after work to pick it up and he was mistaken what lenses he had (he does have pretty much every L lol) as he doesn't use them that often, his P&S is easier for work :D

Luckily we have some awesome customers at our dealership, unfortunately I may now be looking at a more expensive lens at the end of the month if I enjoy this one which on all accounts I may well do lol
