Canon: Looking for a Lens on a budget

Yes
Since the demise of my nifty fifty, I am left with a Sigma 10-20mm and a Canon 28mm prime. (and the kit lens which has sat in the box since I bought the above).

Without the really boring option of replacing the 50mm prime, I'm looking to buy something a bit longer, hopefully within a budget of around £200.

No specific requirements. As you can see from my inventory I'm quite used to being limited by focal lengths, and so that doesn't bother me too much. I generally put one on the camera and roll with it. But if it helps, I often head out on my bike and into the countryside, which is where most of my pictures are taken.

I have no idea what bargains exist out there, so if anyone can enlighten me, it be much appreciated. Thanks.

What is your kit lens, and why not use that?

It's the 18-55mm that came with my 350d when I bought it new. I've always found it a bit soft, and have generally preferred primes in the past. (The Canon 85mm mentioned above is something I've already noted as a potential candidate)

That said, I'm softening to the idea of a zoom with a good focal range. And I tell a little white lie, the kit lens has been back out of the box once or twice in recent weeks, purely to alleviate the boredom of my currently very limited range of lenses.

As a replacement for a kit lens, there is the Canon 17-85mm.

And with wider apertures, the Sigma 17-70mm, Sigma 17-50mm and Tamron 17-50mm.

Most of them are slightly over your budget but they offer different performance options.

If you are interested in any of them, hopefully some users can give you first hand experiences of them.

one i picked up, not everyone's cup of tea, but i got a canon 28-105mm USM II, reasons why, i wanted a walkabout lens with a little more reach and nothing to expensive and proper USM so i can FTM focus, all of this for £120 for a real mint one on evilbay and its been a great buy that gives me (in my opinion) sharp images and alot more usable than my kit lens. the below image was taken with it on a 50d:
