Canon Macro 35-80 mm?

Depends how you define macro. These are the cheapest of the cheap kit lenses for the older EOS film bodies, and calling them macro is a bit optimistic in my opinion! Most people would expect a macro lens to go down to 1:1 reproduction (or at minimum 1:2) but these cheap zooms were nowhere near that.

These lenses are being sold modified to give 1:1 reproduction, Simon. Reversing or simply removing the front element makes it into a true macro lens.

Sorry didn't realise that - I only clicked on the first ebay link and assumed it was unmodified, but the second link is for modded lenses. I guess it could work quite well in that case, and it's certainly a cheap way to get into macro.
 
for the asking price i think you would be better off with a second hand 50mm 1.8 and some extension tubes
if you already have a 50mm or similar lens then a cheap way of trying macro would definitely be extension tubes

i can't see the 35 - 80mm being very impressive to be honest even modified
 
Thanks cosmicma. I have 50mm f1.8 and might think of extension tubes. I bought some cheap ones from eBay but sent them back as they were rubbish.
