Canon macro lens ef 100.. 2.8 help please

Hey All!

I bought a copy of this lens used in a private sale and I'm now getting issues with it. I keep getting an error 01 (communication/cleans contacts) message at any other setting than wide open. I've cleaned the contacts and carried out numerous trails at other setting even in the auto zone but with the same result, the error message at anything other than f2.8. As it is it's unusable and I'm trying to get an idea if this is a common problem that can be fixed so any help/advice is much appreciated. I can't return the lens to the seller and he isn't on here.

My camera is a 600D. I've used a different copy of the lens on this body without any issues and all my other lenses are fine on it.

Some of the images at 2.8 are impressive if I get everything right but it's not very practical as you can imagine the lack of DoF.

I don't know Canon gear but, wondering does this lens have an aperture ring maybe?
 
The fact that all's well at f/2.8 implies that it's the aperture response that's missing or intermittant. If the EXIF shows which lens is attached then the contacts between the lens and body are okay and it points to an internal contact or electronic problem. There is a small ribbon cable from the electronic module to the aperture drive that may be loose....a simple fix or something....or something more costly.

Ah ok, cheers. That was the only issue I could think of. If the aperture ring wasn't locked in pace.

Thanx for the quick response. EXIF shows the lens. Looks like it needs a visit to the repair shop though as I don't fancy doing it myself.
 
Just on the off chance that it caused by sticky aperture blades, you can attempt to "exercise" them by setting a small aperture (f/16'ish) and then repeatedly toggling the DoF preview button. If the blades are truly unresponsive then it won't help and you'll see the error immediately.

Tried doing that with no response. I think that I should send it off for repair and a service. Thanx for the help
