Canon models from old to new...

Hi There,

I'm looking to invest in my first DSLR and after reading lots of reviews etc, I'm leaning towards Canon. (Also because my friend has one and I like the feel of it in my hands)

I just wondered if anyone knew which order they go in from the oldest model to newest one as I'm not sure which I should get?!

EOS 1000D
EOS 450D
EOS 500D
EOS 550D
EOS 50D
EOS 7D

Is there one in particular that is best for a newbie?

Thanks :)

I haven't worked out my budget yet as I've just moved house and don't even have a sofa yet!

I'm planning on saving for one over the next few months but wanted to keep an eye out in case any good second hand deals come up.

I'm just confused as to which are old models and which are new. Is a 40D better than a 450d?

Thanks :-)

Canon's numbering system isn't clear. It goes something like:

Entry level: 1000d

Not quite so entry level: 300d, 350d, 400d, 450d, 500d, 550d.

Mid-range: 10d, 20d, 30d, 40d, 50d

high-mid-range: 7d

pro: 5d, 5dmk2

Super holy hell that's a lot of money pro: 1d, 1dmk2, 1dmk3

Ones in bold I think are still in production.
I don't think I've missed any...

I think the 40d is actually older, but being higher in the range will in many ways outperform the 450d. That's not to say I'd recommend something like a 20d. A bit higher end, yeah, but probaly a bit outdated.

Not quite as straight forward as is the 40D newer than the 450 D, sorry, the xxxD and the 1000D are more entry level, the xxD and 7D are more semi pro/advanced amateur, the 5D series are full frame and the 1D/1Ds Series are pro level, hope that helps.

Edit too slow at typing :D

Things may change a lot in the next few months. Not sure if there are any new bodies due out soon but a new upgrade has a habit of releasing last year's bodies onto the 2nd hand market as people scrabble for the latest model with another whistle or bang that they think they might need and offload the old body that doesn't have all the whistles!

Keep saving and see what you NEED for the new house - I'm afraid that that's got to take precedence over a mere hobby.

To get an idea of 2nd hand prices, look at the For Sale section on this very board as well as Mifsuds and Ffordes websites for dealer prices with warranties. Completed sales on e-bay might be a useful guide as well.

Perfect, thanks for explaining!

Does this sound like a good deal to you. It's from a camera shop recommended by my photographer friend:

Second Hand EOS 450D
12.2mip
+ 18~55mm IS
+ filter
+ hood
+ box

mint condition
£449.00

My brand new 450d + 18-55 IS cost me £500 a year ago. For a used model I'd think that a bit pricey. Can't really fault the camera. Not the best ever constructed but does the job.
At that price I'd consider a used 40d too.

I wanted to get a package that included a lens so I can play around for a while before investing in an upgrade.

Lets say I get the body separately and get a lens when I can afford one, which is the best lens to start off with?

I've read a lot of things about a nifty fifty! Is this the best lens to invest in for a beginner?!

Thanks

I'd say for that money get a 40D, you can pick them up for £400 body only and if you're strapped for cash, you can pick up the lens that is in that kit for £50-70 easy or a nifty fifty for £60 new from Kerso on here. You can then start on the slippery spiral of spending money on lenses until you have the "holy grail" L series lens!

Who needs sofas, couple of airbeds will do the trick!! Fold them up for sofas, down for beds! Simples!

Leaves all your money free for your new hobby (habit!);)

Nifty fifty is good, but too long (zoomed in) for most of what I do. I'd recommend the kit lens to start you off. What's your maximim budget? you can still get a new 450d + kit lens for £500 and you get the security of its warranty too. Or maybe a used 40d + 18-55is
