Hi just a quick question for some of the canon users on the forum. I am looking to buy my first DSLR soon and been looking at a few canon models. My main question now is what is the main differences between the models 20D/30D/40D ect and then the next set of canons 300D/350D/400D. I also seen models with just the one number before the D as well.

I guess I am wanting to know if some of these series are aimed at different markets.

Any comments are greatly appreciated and even if any canon users could recommend a model to be looking at for starting out.

The xxd models are basically the semi pro versions of the xxxd models and offer a number of better features and controls plus a nice chunky and bigger (albeit more heavy) magnesium body. The xd are the pro versions with a price to match.
As for which camera to get it depends on your budget and what you what to shoot.
 
The xxxD models are the entry level consumer bodies. A step up are the xxD and then the 5D (Full frame) and 7D (APS-C). The 1D/1Ds are the so called professional spec bodies.

The xxxD and xxD (both APS-C series sensors) numbers are increased as each generation is superceeded by the next. The xD series use MkII, MkIII etc to move up a generation.

Not sure on the budget, it will be tight but I am looking at getting a used camera with kit lens to start out. I guess then looking at the XXXD range would be a good starting point then and will probably cost a bit less. Also maybe if I can get a good deal I may be able to get a XXD version and it may not be a bridge too far for me. I don't mind putting in the time reading and practising.

as for what I want to shoot I guess anything I find that's interesting. I would say mostly outdoor stuff during the day to start off with. I have a dog they are always good. And maybe some good pics of the family, not necessarily proper portraits but natural shots of the kids playing ect.
 
A shade over £200 will get you a 30D body and another £100 would up that to a 40D. Factor in around £50-£100 for a lens to get you started.
