What would you recomend.I have a 1d3 and im looking for somthing a bit longer than my 70/200mm f2.8

Prime or zoom? What kind of budget?

The 100-400L is a great telezoom for this kind of thing, or the 300 f/4 L IS is a great prime.
The old 300 f/4 L non IS is a good bargain as well if you don't want/need IS.

There's also the sigma 120-400 and 150-500 if you want to spend less, they are fantastic value for money.

You could always add a 1.4x to your 200 f/2.8

100-400L IS IMO, thats what I want next.

You could add a 1.4x extender too your 70-200?, still might leave you short on a full frame body.
 
Canon 300 2.8 or 300 f4.

Ignore the zooms and go for a baby long prime 8)
 
Unless you are in a hurry my experiences says wait for the Canon 200-400f4L due out eminently. 100-400 is great affordable entry to long lens but IQ best at circa 8.0 and that is not so fast. The full range is not required, I find I'm between 300 and 400 most of the time at the track with this lens and mostly about 380mm or just off 400. 5.6 on the long side is not fast enough for motorsport,s unless the light or ISO/noise control in the body, is exceptional. IQ drops quick with TC.

This was my route to early motorsports imaging, 100-400 was my first L, specifically for Motorsports. Great reach and good images, recently picked up a 70-200 2.8 II, OMG!!What a difference a fast lens makes. Can only imagine 400 2.8 II Prime will be the one, but limited usability.

One fleeting thought if you are shooting local tracks with club events you can usually get close enough with nothing near 400mm required. At three sisters several places great with <200mm. Even Oulton or Donnington with faster shorter lens can give some great images. Foggy esses for example would be great with 70-200. For high end Pro events and the likes of Silverstone longer is better but not required. You may want to rent before you buy.

While you are waiting, sell your children for medical experiments and rob a couple of post offices, because if you don't then you won't be able to afford it! :thumbs:
 
I have a 1D MkIII and do use a 70-200mm 2.8IS fitted with a x1.4TCII and it gives me the reach I need.

It does sound like a really appealing lens, but as I don't have any children to sell, and I agree it is likely to cost lots, I think my recommendation (and thought as to one day I might buy) would be to think about the new 70-300L IS or 100-400L IS
 
I know I am a Nikon user but I can really rate the Sigma 120-300.. but only if Sigma floats your boat of course!

for what sort of motorsport?

For circuit racing, 70-300 is probably better for a x1.6 crop. 100-400 more useful, but now an old lens. Consider Sigma 120-300 f2.8 or go for primes - 300mm f4 or 400 f5.6 if you can't afford the f2.8 ones.

For rallying, shorter lenses needed, but benefit from faster aperture.
 
Ive taken some absolutely cracking motorsport shots with my Canon 55-250 IS!
 
I've used my 100-400 with and without 1.4X TC on my 1D3 at focal lengths ranging from 100mm....

Both shots are wide open. It's a combination that works well enough for me.
 
I'm another who rates the Sigma 120-300 very highly, I haven't used it much of late due to space restrictions in my bag, but it never ceases to amaze me just how sharp it is. Takes a x1.4 and x2 very nicely too if you ever need a whole load more length!
