Hi all,

Just wondering if there's some kind of basic range comparison between nikon and canon?

I.e. Canon 30D is rougly equivelent to the Nikon D90 etc... ?

Cheers :)

There's no direct comparison between the ranges, the 30D is an old model though, which would have sat between the D80 and D200 in Nikon terms.

There isn't one really, they pass like ships in the night...

Its all about budget and the glass you intend to buy..:)

Interesting! I'd have thought that each brand would bring out certain models to beat the other's! They're very different beasts though I guess.

They do, but Canon tend to be more aggressive with their pricing, so a lot of it comes down to ergonomics, features and build quality. Without wishing to start a flame war, Canon tend to go for a feature-driven approach, whereas Nikon pay more attention to ergonomics and build quality. I'm not saying one is better than the other, but on paper you get more bang-for-your-buck with Canon. It all depends on your priorities really :)

Lens compatibility tends to be better through the Canon range I believe?!

Well the Nikon F-mount hasn't altered since it was introduced in 1959, so there is a massive choice with the classic manual lenses - a 50mm f/1.2 will meter nicely on a D200! :D

At entry-level I'd say Canon has a clear advantage - and oddly one that they themselves don't promote - in that all of their current lenses work on all of their current cameras (I believe).

That isn't true for Nikon and if I'd fully appreciated it I'd be writing this post as the owner of a Canon 400D -- even though I think my D40X rocks.

I'd agree with that last statement - as a beginner on a tight budget, Canon would be better - but as you 'climb the ladder', so to speak, I think Nikon has the edge over Canon in terms of funtionality, useability and robustness...

Bear in mind also that there are a plethora of adapters to convert F mount to EF, so it's trivial to use all the old Nikon lenses on a Canon body—so that advantage isn't as clear cut as it might seem.

Not quite (though nearly). Any EF-S lens (though there are not that many) will NOT work on a full frame digital canon (5m2, 1d etc). An EF lens will work on any dslr canon camera.

Apart from the above issue, all the lenses will auto-focus, ALL of them- with whatever body.

Well... Nikon and Canon are certainly the two main players, but as for a direct range comparison I'm not so sure? Certainly they aim for the same markets and within that each model will have pros and cons.

Both produce consumer through to professional level kit, both have a huge system of accessories that make up an entire camera system too. They're in direct competition so they tend to "leapfrog" each other every few years. Currently Nikon are at the top. I suspect this surprised Canon somewhat but it should have been obvious really.

I'm a Canon user, and I find Nikon gear to be odd and awkward to handle. This probably sounds like heresy to a competent Nikon user but it's perfectly true. Equally I'd be surprised if a Nikon user didn't feel the same about Canon kit. I'd also be surprised that if we really had no other choice we'd soon get used to using either.

It's good to have a choice... and anyway... Canon have a better range of lenses

cheers

I can only find annual reports for 2008 as yet: (net sales in million's of yen)

Canon 4,094,161
Nikon 955,792

Have Nikon really caught Canon up?

These figures are irrelevant because they cover the companies' entire product ranges, not just cameras. Canon have their fingers into far more pies than Nikon.

If you dig into the details of their sales, you get:

Canon (Cameras division, page 39) = 1042 bn Yen, down 9.6% on previous year
Nikon (Imaging Products division, page 12) = 586 bn Yen, up 30.6% on previous year

But I wouldn't want to be on even these numbers being comparable in a fair sense.

...

In terms of which is the better camera... probably yes.

And bear in mind, this is from a Canon user who currently has no intention of switching.

The opposite was true for me, I just don't find Canon gear comfortable to hold or use. I thought it was maybe just the lower end models, but a shot of a 5d MKI recently left me with the same feeling.

I know it's a fantastic camera, I just couldn't put up with the ergonomics of it. Probably more down to having had Nikon cameras for so long mind you, had a I started with Canon I'd probably find Nikons equally awkward
