Good evening all

I'm after some views on the 24-70 f2.8 lenses available for Canon bodies.

My 17-40 is proving both a little too wide and a tad too short for close up indoor event shooting, the constant f4 is also a bit limiting in low light so i'm considering making a purchase :D

The sigma is 1/2 the cost of the canon....but is it half the quality?
I have the Siggy 70-200 ex and it's always impressed me tbh.....(but that little red ring sure looks pretty :D) but 70 is a couple of mm too long.

thoughts and experiences pleeeeeease :D

I've had both the Canon 24-70 and Sigma and now own neither!

The Sigma was optically a great lens but the AF was very slow - it was the non HSM version and for what I wanted it wasn't fast enough. So, I sold it and bought the Canon. Cracking lens, heavy, sharp and extremely quick.

The only reason I sold it was to get the 24-105 as I was after a touch more reach at the top end.
 
You could always look into the 17-55 f2.8 is, if you shoot crop (your 'camerabag' is vague to say the least) as this lens is considered to be of L quality but as its EFS they apparently cannot call it an 'L'

That way keep your wide and gives you a little more reach.

I use the 24-70mm on my 5D and tbh it spends most of its time on there, it is a stunning lens thats not only sharp but quick at focusing too.

You could do worse than grab a secondhand 28-70/2.8L. Pixel peeping will show that it's slightly behind it's newer cousin but it was the mainstay of many a wedding tog in the not too distant past.

Nicholas Cameras and York Cameras both have them available.

I've got the Sigma 24-70 and it keeps me happy. Supposedly it's only 90% as good as the Canon but at half the price of the Canon & with a 3 year warranty...........

had teh sigma 24 70 had to return as quality very poor soft on some pin sharp on others.

but as it was to be used as portrait and wedding lens couldnt take the chance, very poor quality. but that doesnt mean that there are crackers out there, for the siggy
 
I am indeed a 5D owner ......at the moment..... :D

I hadn't even looked at the Tamron tbh, i'll have a look at your Flickr in a wee bit ;)

There are two Siggy's, one of which is as much as the Canon because of it's internal focusing. It's main use will be the dimmly lit confines of pub/club type establishments. I've been experimenting with flash but i'm just not getting the feel I want with flash. so wider ap and ambient light is the way forward I think.
 
I've tried a 50 f1.4, great light gathering ability and sharp as a tack......but being prime it's a bit limiting when capturing a moving subject iykwim. the ability to zoom and frame is a must.


Bob......you know me sooooooo well, my 400mm is the most expnsive door stop I own. :D
