I'm In the market for a new landscape/walkabout lens, as although I keep trying with my 28-135 its just not cutting the mustard.
Only prob is that I cant seem to pull myself away from canon!! currently using 5d2 and although I keep being drawn back to the 17-40 I'm not sure if I'm that worried about going as wide as 17, obviously there is also the 24-105 but again its canon!! Should I go against my self grain and look at sigma or tamron? And If so what!

I'm no expert, but I don't think any of the 3rd party zooms are up to the standard of the Canons.

With other requirements I'd be happy to recommend 3rd party, but not for your needs.
 
I don't have a full-frame body (camera body that is :) ), but I think the 24-105 Canon lens is very well thought of as a general purpose lens..
 
Don't rule out third party offerings but If you feel that you don't want to be drawn away from Canon then that's fair enough.

Even on a 1D3 which is 1.3 crop I find my 17-40L a bit wide as a walkabout but fine when shooting landscapes. On my full frame it's way too wide for general walkies.

My 24-105L is just right for me on ff or 1.3 if I want to just stick one lens on, head out with nothing in mind and not care about the weather too much.

Love my 17-40 for dedicated landscapes under 24mm but my 24-105 is better over the focal length that both cover.

In other words:

17-24mm - the 17-40 is great to have.
24-40mm - the 17-40 stays in my bag
40-105 - the 17-40 has no use.

24-105 on the camera with the 17-40 popped in a pocket for extra width when needed. Happy days.

I know of a couple of people that have returned Canon 24-70mm 2.8s to the shop and swapped for the new Art Sigma 24-70 2.8s..
 
I was not impressed with our very heavy Canon 24-70. My Tamron 24-70 f2.8 is sharper especially wide open so I sold the Canon. We also have a Canon 24-105. Good walk around lens with extra reach but again not as sharp as the Tamron. If I had to choose one lens of the two then without doubt I would keep the Tamron.

We also have the 17-40 which to be honest only gets used when we are doing landscape photography. Most 17-40's have a reputation of being a little soft at the corners especially wide open but with landscape photography that is hardly relevant. For anything above 24mm we turn to the Tamron.
 
Canon 6d paired with the 24-105 as a walk around set up for me and it's excellent, nuff said
