canon or tamron help

in the market for a new zoom, have a canon 75-300mm but the less said about that the better. anyways i have had a play with a tamron 70-300mm (the vc version) @£309 and a canon 70-300mm IS USM @ £369 (digitalrev have this for £249) both have pluses and minus's.

canon 70-300mm IS USM Pros:
fast AF, canon dependability, USM, 2 mode IS, 58mm thread, bit cheaper, zoom lock,

cons:
feels a bit 'sloppy' in controls, rotating front element, need to purchase lens hood separately.

Tamron 70-300mm VC pros:
seems very well built, all accessories included, very good reviews, front element doesn't rotate.

cons:
not used tamron previously, no zoom lock (not sure i need this though), single mode IS, slower IS.

also i noted when using the tamron it sort of freezes in the viewfinder when the VC kicks in, is this normal?


so has anyone had any real work experience, with either? or suggest any viable alternatives (max budget £300), i was really after a canon 70-200L F4 but they are still a little pricey for me.

I use a tamron 70-300vc with a canon 7d and don't have any complaints. I've had the tamron for about a year now and have got some photos I'm very happy with from it. The vc does make the image in the viewfinder freeze or jump momentarily when switched on but it is very effective and provides good stabilisation once active.

The 70-200f4 was just too short for my needs which is why I got the tamron, most of my photos with it have been in the 200-300mm range.
 
Thanks for the replys so tamron is good then, has anyone used it on the 50d, I would love the70-200l f4 but I can't seem to find any for reasonable price, how does it perform without the IS?

I have no experience of the Tamron but I have the Canon 70-300mm.

I'd describe the optical quality as adequate and no more. Mechanically it seems like it's a few generations behind the newer designs and whilst I do like USM this lens uses the older type which doesn't allow full time manual focus so it's less good.

Look around for local adverts/classifieds to see if you can find one for a decent price? I picked up my 70-200 for around £330 a couple of years ago and have been very happy with the results on both my 500D and 7D.

Taken your advice and on another popular forum managed to get a 70-200mm l f4 for £350 delivered, can't wait :)
