Canon Pixma printer Error 6004

I bought a Pixma TS8150 about 4 years ago and up to now it has been great. I printed 5 A6 photos and an A5 photo today with no problems but when I tried to print another A5 I got a 6004 error code with the advice to cancel the printing, switch off the printer and then switch it on again.:) If that didn't work then the printer needed to go to a service centre.
I had a look on line and it appears to be a common problem but none of the suggested solutions that I saw (check for paper jams, check the USB connection, unplug it whilst it is on, leave it off for 15 mins) have worked.
Has anyone else had this problem and solved it or do I just go and buy another printer.

Incidentally I still have a HP Deskjet which is about 14 years old and is still going OK although the inks are hard to get hold of now and the quality of the prints aren't as good as the Canon.
