Canon Powershot G12 aperture question

I'm puzzled. When I use my G12 on aperture priority , I can't seem to stop it down smaller than F8. Is this usual, or am I missing something? I would have expected at least F16.

Seems about right to me, my S90 goes to f8 as well.

I guess there's no real advantage on a compact of going any smaller.
 
f/8 it is David.....more than enough for the sensor size I'd have thought.

The high pixel density will mean that diffraction will offset any benefit of perceived increase in DoF at smaller apertures.

Thanks Bob, I think understand :thinking: Though I wasn't especially looking for max DoF.

I found the limitation when I took this slow water shot with the G12, using the method I usually use with my dSLR: lowest ISO, aperture priority, small aperture, tripod. Thus forcing long shutter opening. Luckily there was very little light so I got what I was after anyway. Perhaps I should try out the built in ND filter?

Nice shot :thumbs:
The built in 3 stop ND should give you more latitude than you'd ever expect in f-stops on a small sensored camera.
