Hi, I'm new to this forum and would like your opinions on the new Canon Powershot S90.

I want a camera to slip into my pocket for those occassions when I am not carrying my DSLR.

I'm not really bothered about the video capabilities - I wont use it - but I am choosy when it comes to image quality.

I have considered the Panasonic LX3, but think it will be to big to carry in my pocket, I may be wrong on this as I havent seen one as yet.

I have been reading reviews, but keep coming back to the S90, so any comments on this camera or alternative suggestions would be gratefully received :)

I know its expensive, but I am prepared to pay the price - £329 is the cheapest I have seen it advertised for

Folks seem to be very pro panasonic round these parts and even most Canon shooters tend to have a panny in the pocket when the need for small arises.

The S90 has received very few good words here compared to the LX3, which does seem to be the main rival. I'm not too sure that the size difference is all that much and a trip to see both in the flesh should really be your next stop. Ideally with a card to take home images from both to compare.

The chances are that whichever you get, in the real world both will be the inevitable. Impressive in their comfort zone, woeful out of it.

Reasonably happy with my S90. Nice small camera with decent picture quality and low light performance.

Drawbacks: 1. Instruction manuals on CD only! You really must print them to be able to use the camera in the intended way. Not very userfriendly and to big (A4) to bring along!
2. P (program) is much more limited than on a DSLR.
3. I have not yet found a way to customize the file names. A pain in the ass if you have several cameras.
4. There are more issues with the software which I am not very happy with. I would e.g. like to be able to set limits to some parameters.

Perhaps I am spoiled by my DSLR cameras, but I was expecting more from Canon. Perhaps this is as good as it gets with a P/S?

You can rename the files as you download tehn to your PC and canon do get better with the G10 all the controls of a SLR and hotshoe the G11 has as well but I not ues that one

Thanks for the replies.

The G10 & G11 are too big for me as a pocket camera.

My main requirement, its got to fit easily into my pocket. I don't always carry the DSLR and I want a camera that I can always have with me :)
