I did a thread asking if people good recommend a good compact as i need a decent point and shoot that has a good zoom and a decent pixel count, initially i wanted a compact but i don`t mind the slightly larger bridge cameras as they are suitable for what i need from a camera for at the min.

I now need to decide between these 2 cameras, a Canon powershot SX10 IS and a Panasonic Lumix FZ28, if anyone owns or has had any experiences with these cameras your input would be appreciated or maybe their is another camera that does similar to these 2 that i have overlooked that you could recommend. Thanks

Can't comment on the Panasonic, the wife has the Canon SX 10 IS, although she uses it mostly on Auto (green square) it produces some cracking shots. The 20x zoom is very good throughout the range BUT stay away from the Digital zoom bit at the end, it wrecks the shot. I have disabled it for the wife so theres no accidents. The camera sits well in the hand has a number of manual settings, manual focus,av mode,tv mode P mode and other preset modes too. Video is not bad quality too but obviously not as good as a dedicated camcorder. Viewfinder is electronic with the option of using the viewscreen at the rear, I like the tilt/swivel screen, useful for setting the camera down low, just tilt the screen upwards. Controls on the rear are within easy reach of your thumb. There is a hotshoe for a external flash, if you have any of the speedlite range of flashes then its compatible with the sx 10 but can be top heavy with one on. It not bad in low light too, all in all a bit like a mini dslr, ability to take raw would have been nice. It wont fit in your shirt pocket, maybe in yoiur jacket pocket, it did in mine.

The links below so some pics using the sx 10 on Auto (green square)mode.

Frank, thanks for taking the time to do a detailed reply, those pics for a semi portable camera are excellent.

If you were in the position that i am and about to buy a camera now would you spend a little extra on the Canon PowerShot SX1 IS which has RAW and HD video, ive seen them go for around the £320 mark on ebay compared to around £250 for the PowerShot SX10 IS, do you think RAW and HD video is worth the extra £70 ish.

I've read a few reviews that say that the IQ of the SX1 IS is inferior to that of the SX10 IS, even though the 10 is cheaper

So you pays your money and takes your choice

Totally aggree just sent an SX1is back because it was crap, VERY noisy even at iso80!
Fuji S100fs is 100% better IQ

The Raw is a plus but as far as video is concerned to be honest I'm not into video, don't have a HD telly so I don't really care for it. My opinion has always been if video is a important thing then buy a dedicated video camera. Fortunately Claymore has posted giving you a opinion on the SX1 which should help you decide, I have never used the SX1 so can't comment .

I have taken a few photos tonight with differnt ISO values, all except one were taken in AV mode NO FLASH fired, should be with each pic. All handheld and only adustment was a resize and change of reso' for the forum. The photo with flash was taken in auto mode. I just aimed and fired off these shots without bothering to make any in camera adjustments. Not a proper test by all means but I hope this helps you with your decision.

i have the FZ28, let me know if you have any specific q's to this model. This one has HD video and RAW capability. I dont like the viewfinder too much (its like staring really close at CRT TV), although i do like to have it, because you dont get any glare which the lcd display will. the macro function is quite good, although nowhere near true macro or 1:1 magnification.

Heres some shots I took.

Thanks to you both, those are excellent photos for a camera in this price range. I think this would suit my needs as i`m mainly after a camera for basic every day use, just a quick question on the HD video side of things.

The video is not the bee all and end all to me but it would come in handy every now and then, ive heard the sound is pretty poor, is this true ?

What is the pic quality like at the longest zoom, would you say they are acceptable ? What puts me off the canon is it has no RAW option which is a pitty as it looks to have a better LCD..

I forgot to ask, does it come with a hood and does it use a lithium batter or a load of AA batteries ?

sound quality isnt great but its livable. i personally dont record much as i have the worst camera shake.

To me the zoom on the lumix from 1x-18x optical is faultless (but I am an amateur). I have posted a few shots for you to gauge for yourself.

This is at 1x

The lumix has it own battery and comes with a hood.

very impressive shots wished my SX1is was a good!

i think the lumix is a successful combination of good technology and excellent Leica lens. But everyone should try it for themselves before buying. it is quite fiddly and niggly. I dont like the process for adjusting aperture and shutter speed. I prefer the jog wheel on 350d, its so simple.

I think i`m going with the Panasonic Lumix FZ28 as it seems good value and by the looks of it the images it produces are excellent, its just a matter of finding one now at a decent price.

Aye your better off with the Panasonic, also try and have a look at the Fuji S100FS not as long zoom but seen some very nice shots taken with them you can also add a TCON 17 etc for longer range.

Make sure you try it out first, it is a bit fiddly. I had to learn to live with mine, and now i love it.
