Canon primes 20 & 28mm - thoughts?

Hi all,

loving the nify fifty but its just a bit long at times on my 40D. Shoot biking etc and have a 10-20mm which is ace bit just a bit fragile to be carrying in a bike sack in the hills...

like the thought of a 20mm f2.8 or 28mm f2.8, does anybody have any experiance of these and anything to look out for etc?

why is the 20mm so much more expensive, just because its USM? out of choice i think the 20mm is better for me, but the wallet says 28mm....

I'm going for the 28mm as my next lens due to loving my nifty f/1.8 but not particularly loving the field of view on it. I love primes

I've played with one in a LCE store and I LOVED IT. It's fast, clear, crisp and well made. I couldn't ask for more.

If you're preferring wide angles, save a bit of dolla and get the 20mm!

ha reckon the 28mm and i'll tape a bit on lead on the side to make it feel expensive

Canon's 20mm 2.8 USM is reputedly a pretty disappointing lens, check out some reviews before you take the plunge.

You'll need 220g of ballast to get the equivalent feeling although I'm not sure it'll be any more successful than painting your willy black in the hope that it'll look bigger.

I personally don't see the point of a non macro f2.8 prime on APS-C unless you get it at a knock down bargain price, I'd rather use a zoom. I personally would go for a Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 as it's fairly compact and light. I have a 20mm f1.8 and I'd be interested in a 28mm f1.8 but the f2.8 versions are different beasts and don't interest me personally.

I have the 28mm f2.8 and it is very sharp and quick to focus. Maybe not as versatile as a fast standard zoom but can be found for about £100 2nd hand and very light
