I have the 9500 Mk II, and I am very impressed by it.
Either printer will 'work better' if you have a profiler capable of doing both paper and monitor. (I have the colormunki photo 1 I think it is called). Although prints onto Canon and Ilford paper were good, they are noticeably better once I had created a custom profile.
Looking around though, although the 9500 MkII does not appear to be end-of-life exactly, it looks like there are three new Canon printers (the -100 as mentioned above) which are replacements for the 9000 Mk II and the 9500 Mk II.
I think the thing with the 9500 Mk II is to leave it powered on all the time. It will wake itself up and 'mix' (vibrate) the ink cartridges to ensure that they don't settle. Otherwise, they 'loose' perhaps 10% if left unused for a long period.
