Does the infra red remote come with a reciever that plugs into the camera or does the camera just pick up the signal?

I have canon 7d, also does it have half way press focus or is it just shutter so you would have to do the focus first?

No it doesn't come with a receiver; if the RC1 is compatible with your camera, your camera will have an infrared receiver on the front of it (my 450D did, my 50D hasn't, hence I sold my RC1). And when you click the button on the remote there's no half-way-to-focus; once you press it the camera should simply focus and take the pic in one sequence; therefore the shot is not quite instantaneous, more like the way a fast compact camera works when you press the shutter button without prefocussing.

You can get relatively cheap wireless remotes from HK, have one for my 350D works great, shame Canon has different sockets on their cameras, why not standardise, I have to get a new one now.

On the 7D the IR receiver is in the middle of the grip at the front - just below the shutter release button.

As said already, press the RC1 and the camera focuses and takes the shot (unless you have previously manually focused the subject!)

I'm hoping I can still use my TC-80N3 with it - not checked yet!

The RC-1 is total pants. Save your money and buy one of the cheapo Chinese made radio based ones.

"Flash in the Pan" (a user on here) sells them from the UK and advertises in the for sale section on here.

Seriously, don't waste your time with IR.

Wireless remotes I've been looking at but the ones i've seen from hong kong attach to the flash hot shoe, thats no good to me as I need to have that free for my flash, are there any that attach through the side port of the 7d?

I think they only slot on the hotshoe to keep them out of the way, they don't actually connect to it electrically :)

I see,

I've ordered one from flash in the pan for the cable release socket, looking forward to it arriving!

You'll be fine with that - just how much better than IR thankfully you will never know, but trust me, I've saved you from a right frustrating time!

i got a cheap wired one from Jessops - that way i can be anywhere in relation to the camera (within 2 metres) rather than in front of the camera.

how much was the cheap wired one?

the transmitter I have I can be anywhere around the camera a lot further than 2 meters, great for group shots when I am in the group!

yeh, AND you can have some fun doing it! Get all your mates in the group but dont tell them about the remote. When you say 'smile' or whatever, just walk up to the group with the remote hidden, join the group, and press the button! Some of the expressions in the pic are a joy to behold!

i found that the wireless one would only let me use it when i was in front of the camera - not good if i'm trying to take a picture of something - which is also usually in front of the camera ;]

the cheap wired one was about £15 from Jessops if i remember. it allows me to park my arse on railings or stuff like that, and take pictures without touching the camera :P

Errrm the wireless ones we are talking about here are radio based... your position in relation to the receiver plugged into the camera matters not one jot.

The POS IR ones I'll give you are a right pain in the bum.

I'll stick with my original suggestion - cheapo radio ones from FitP are the way to go.

oooh, you should have done a little more research before you got that. My radio frequency one cost £20 including postage from Flash in the pan here on this forum. It's not infra red, its RF so I can stand up to 50 metres (something like that) from the camera and not be tethered to it, if you still have the receipt maybe you can take it back?

i aint bothered about wireless ones. to be honest i'm not likely to be more than 2m away from the camera anyway :]

plus a wireless one is more bits to lose !

You could always tie the two bits together with a piece of string so you don't loose one.

If you make the string 50m long then you can also use the range :D

fair enough, the only problem is you'll never be able to use your wired one with yourself in the photo as you'll be holding the wire, but if thats not something you need to do then its not a problem
