Hi

I want a remote shutter release for my 50d. My options are the cable release ( RS-80N3) or the infra red trigger (RC-1). The infra red one is much cheaper than the cable one and has the added advantage that i can use it for self portraits. Is there any disadvantage to the infra-red one? Is there any reason why the cable one would be better?

Bizarrely the cable release is much more expensive than wireless one.

ARgh really? It worked with my 300d so im a little saddened by the fact that my higher end 50d doesn't have one :(

I don't think any of the xxD bodies have them....You'll either need a cable one, or one of the radio triggers....beware though, you get what you pay for!!

Any recommendation for a cable release then? I was going to get a cheapo ebay one but now you have scared me about doing that :)

RS-80N3 would be the standard choice, or if you were into proper time lapse photography, the TC80-N3 would be ideal..

These are both original Canon accessories, something I personally stick with.

You can get the RS-80N3 for about £40, or the TC version for about £100 if you shop around...

In my experience with my 40D (I also had to get rid of my RC-1 infrared remote since it wouldn't work for obvious reasons) the cable trigger does just fine and you can pick up ones for as little as £5. The radio remote thingy-ma-jigs start at around £15 but I can't vouch for any of their quality, so it's best to read reviews. Just have a look on Amazon and give it a go. If it's not great, it's only £15!

I find the cable release is ok for me but in some situations it would be so, so handy to have a radio remote. I've been sellotaping the button down on my torch and then sellotaping it to my point of interest for focus at night, then going back to the camera to focus, then running around to take off the torch to be ready for the shot, instead of being able to stand there with the torch and use a wireless remote to focus instead of doing a Blue Peter job with using the cable release.

But it's fun as hell. :D

Have you considered going 3rd party for it rather than Canon? There's a Yongnuo one you can get off ebay for about £20 that works as a shutter release, self timer, intervalometer and long exposure timer. I haven't given mine much use yet, but it seems to do the trick :)

This is the seller I got it from, if you're interested :)

I was talking more about the radio triggers than the cable release....my fault, should have made it clearer! :bonk:

If you can afford the Canon stuff, buy it. If you don't fancy paying a premium, then buy a cheapy. The cheap ones usually function well but the build quality is nowhere near the Canon stuff. You pays your money....!!

I bought one of those Yongnuo ones off Ebay which stated a 100mtr. range and when I measured it, it came out at only 96 mtrs consistently.
No I haven't returned it !!!!!

I've got a 3rd party wireless one for my 30D / 50D, I've found that it doesn't seem to effect the image quality at all ;)

Will H when you use the self timer on the camera the focus is set when you press the shutter release, not when the timer triggers. This makes it a pain for self portraits. Does your cable release timer focus when the picture is being taken or when the timer is started? This looks like a LOT of product for the money but I won't really be using the time laps feature. It's more for long exposure and for self portraits that i want the remote function.

I'm 99% certain it focusses when the picture is taken - I should get chance to try it out this afternoon and confirm that though :)

Edited to confirm that it most certainly does :)

Only thing I would say is that I'm using the version for the 500D but that one looks & is described in exactly the same way and has the same model number so I'd assume that the only difference is the fit TBH
