On May 30th this year I bought a 24-70L. Tonight I noticed that the zoom ring is starting to tighten up towards the 24 end. I can't find my receipts and only paid part on my card which I have the receipt for. I have emailed the store that I bought it from to see if they can help and I'm awaiting a reply. I have been looking on http://www.canon.co.uk/Contact_us/ but there is no email address that I can see? Am I in trouble or will they help if I can find an email address? Date code is this year but proof of payment is an issue :(

Even though you only paid part of it on your card, that receipt would still have a transaction number that the retailer should be able to tie back to the purchase so I think you'll be OK.

Personally I'd push for a replacement rather than a repair as it's less than 2 months old.

I have a feeling that if you part pay for something on credit card then the card issuer e.g. Barclaycard etc is totally liable for the goods if over £100 in value, given its a 24/70 I'm pretty confident you paid more than £100. So if all else fails I think you can claim off your card supplier.

This is correct (or certainly used to be)... Give your bank a call and talk to them about options.

Canon at Elstree, will in the absence of an invoice/receipt, where its available use the lens "Date code" as the start of the Warranty period, so if your lens date code is for example: UZ01 = Jan 2011, they will cover warranty repairs until Jan 2012.

Thanks for the replys, I paid £249.99 on my debit card and £750 cash. I recieved a very prompt reply via email from jacobs in Edinburgh today (where I bought the lens) with an attatchment of the receipt, excellent service  Russ77, would asking for a new one not be a bit cheeky, I thought you had to give them a chance at repairing?

I had a reply from Canon advising me to send to one of their outlets listed below. Interesting the want proof of purchase - which I now have. Are any better than others? there has allready been a mention to the Elstree repair centre so that's first choice I think

I would still pursue repair/replacement via the retailer as it's within the first year and ask for a copy of the original receipt for you records (be honest and say you've misplaced it, don't think it's really going to be a big deal for them).

The retailer has provided me with a duplicate receipt. If I take it back (5 hour round trip) surely they will just sent to an authorised repairer so I may as well save some fuel. I thought by law you have to give chance of repair? I'm thinking of sending it to Elstree as they have been recommended on this thread. It looks, but I maybe wrong, that they are the main repairers as the address has Canon Uk within it and the others just authorised repaiters?

I think legally as soon as you accept a repair you will not be able to ask for a replacement as you have accepted the lens as a good sample.
Anyway, Elstree have always been first class in my experience.

I've used Elstree on a few occasions for repairs and calibration work both in and out of warranty. No complaints from me. Luckily for me they're an easy 35 minutes drive away so I take my stuff in personally and let them ship it back to me. Taking the stuff in means I can have a proper chat about any issues and explain exactly what I want done.

First choice is Elstree, they were excellent with my 1D IV, I've found Lehmann a little slow when have had dealings with them, they have always got it right, just seem to take a long time.

Unfortunately the jacobs store in Edinburgh was the closest, it's a similar distance to Liverpool. I think I will be happy with a repair? I could get another new one and still have problems? Sending it to Elstree tomorrow. Will they just fix the problem or give the lens a thorough check? Thanks for the reccomendations.
