Ok, heres the deal. i currently own a nikon D40x and a 18-135mm lens. i love my camera but i do find it difficult to carry it around when i'm out and about with my little one. we are going on holiday soon, and i will be taking my D40x, but i want to invest in a good 'bridge' camera, which will give me a good zoom range, and be easier to carry in my bag. i also dont really want to take my nikon to the beach, so i do need another camera. my current compact, a samsung i5 digimax, i find gives poor quality photos now ever since i bought my nikon, so i dont want to use it anymore LOL.

I've narrowed them down to the above two, as they both have a 12xzoom, and 2 1/2" LCD screen. i do like the fact that the canon's LCD is variable, and i do like canons features like the colour accent and the red eye correction, but i dislike the fact that it needs 4xAA batteries and its photos are not as good as the panasonics. any suggestions? i would be willing to consider other bridge cameras too, but i want a 12xzoom at least? many thanks

We've seen some nice macros from the FZ8 here by Ajophotog, raw without hacking the firmware is a plus as well.
Here are some vids that might help you:

thanks for the links....off to have a look

I had the very same idea as you and went for the Panasonic, if you remember that the panny isn't great in low light, I don't shoot above iso 200 and 400 at the very most you will love the panny. I in fact use it far more than my canon 350d. Can't help with the S5 as I haven't ever used one.
