Canon S90 or S95 to compliment DSLR?

Folks,

I have a Canon 550D with various lenses, decent tripod etc and I love it.

However, I guess like many photographers I sometimes see random photo opportunities when out and about, on nights out etc and I don't want to carry all my SLR kit with me everywhere just in case I see a shot.

I don't have any kind of compact at the moment, but I think something fairly cheap that fits in my pocket would be good for those times when an SLR is too much hassle. I'm also going travelling for a few months starting in August so a back-up camera would be nice.

I've read/seen great things about the Canon S95 online and from friends with them. I've also seen good things about the previous S90.

I'm not bothered about taking videos, just want a camera that can take good shots day and night and fit in my pocket.

Budget isn't huge, but given that the S95 isn't much more than the S90 these days, is it worth paying that bit extra?

I share the DSLR with the missus, so it is likely that the compact will be my only camera on some days when I'm out shooting 'properly' as well.

What say the learned people of TP? :thumbs:
 
The S90 is a very good camera. The S95 is a very good camera based on the S90 but with a years worth of improvements.

If there's negligable price difference, go for the S95.
 
Those were my thoughts.
I did just find a decently priced S90 in the classifieds though.

I was under the impression that the upgrades for the S95 were mainly video related?
 
I couldn't tell the difference between the s90 and s100 to be honest. The only thing that struck me was the s90 has a metal body and the s100 was made entirely from plastic and a bit slimmer. Performance wise, picture quality etc nowt i could see but the video on the s100 was crisp. Also the s90 has a speaker for video playback whereas I couldn't get the s100 to sing to me. It seems like a bit of cost cutting on the newer models.
 
S100 has a CMOS sensor
YouTube clips versus competitors look good
Quick play in store seems good
Better video, frames per second, wider angle, zoom
 
We've got a S90 too. I say we as as my wife is happy to use it in P or Auto and I quite like it when carrying the SLR isn't practical.

It wasn't cheap when I got it but the image quality and handling don't disappoint.

The only complaint I would make is that the way I hold it means that my fingers fall on the pop-up flash. I don't know whether this is just me or not, my wife has never whinged about it. Other than that it is a lovely little camera.
 
I bought the S95 as a back up to my DSLR. :) I don't know how it compares to the S90, :shrug: but I've found it very good. :thumbs:

I liked the ergonomics of the S95, and the ability to shoot in RAW. Reading about the S100, I think the ergonomics have been compromised to incorporate the GPS.
 
I picked up a factory refurbished s95 for about £170 a few months ago and its been excellent, amazing picture quality, good in low light and some quite good effects that I would not have thought of using but fun. Video is also excellent (not why I bought it). Also so small that you can have it with you everywhere. I hear the s100 is almost the same but faster and with a bigger focal range but twice the price. S95 has to be the one to get at the moment. Recommended.

Factory refurb did you buy that direct?
 
My Dad bought an S90 from the Canon refurb store on eBay for £140 at the back end of last year, so it is worth keeping an eye out there.
