Am looking at the Canon EP780 or the newer ES40 for quick prints for photo frames etc and also because its an easy "no pc" option for the wife to use.
Has anyone used either and could therefore comment on their quality and ease of use?

Many thanks

Garry

I take one of the older ones (CP710) away with me on holiday. I chose it because it prints direct from assorted cards, can be connected to a computer (if necessary) is reasonably compact and (most importantly) is dye sub so no wet inks can escape into my suitcase. It also prints directly onto paper pre-printed as a postcard on the back side, so I send back personalised pics. Works out cheaper than buying generic postcards too!

Very easy to use, either via the camera's menu (pict-bridge) or the printer's own screen (when reading from the card). Can't remember exactly what prints cost per unit but it's easy to work out since the inks and paper come in a pack together.

Thanks for that, the CP780 is far more portable in that respect than the ES40. is the quality ok? the seem to only be 300x300dpi which seems a bit low or am i missing something?

My only other concern i guess is future availablilty of the paper/ink. Epson seem to have ditched their PictureMate series, i know someone who is fining it increasingly difficult to find the ink packs for those on the high street. So i was a bit worried for the same reason about the Selphy, but it does look like Canon may stick with them for a while.

thats 300 dots per inch, which is fairly standard (its what my proper dye sub uses)

they were something that kept tempting me, then I went the other way :p

The SELPHY ES40 is better for an all-in-one solution - the ink and paper come in one cartridge (CP series ink and paper are separate and you have a separate paper tray) and the AC power adapter is in the body on the ES series so you just plug a figure of 8 cable in the back of the unit. It has an easy scroll wheel and bigger screen than the CP-780. Print quality is better from the ES series and it also prints ID photos which is quite handy.

It's very simple to use if you print directly from camera memory card to the printer - you simply select the photo you want to print and press print and press go. SELPHY uses dye-sub technology so each "dot" on the paper is a solid colour rather than a mixture of colour dots - so it produces very natural 6x4's in my experience.
