OK so I need to send my 500D in to service due to a fault.

Where would you send it?
Lehmanns
Canon UK
A J Johnstone and company
or Colchester camera repair services

I have read quite a few rants about Lehmanns, but as always you only hear about the bad experiences.

My gut says send it to Canon but if the others are better with a quicker turn around I am willing to send it there.

Canon UK for me, everytime.

Could be wrong, but I would rather send it somewhere where they would definitely stock (or get hold or stock quickly) spare parts.

Can be slightly more expensive.

Their online tracking systems are pretty good and you get text/email/web updates.

It's still under warranty so price isn't an issue, I would like a quick turn arround as I need the cmaera for a week on Thursday.

I have to disagree with Canon Uk from my experience. I have had my kit in several times for general service/calibration, as a lot of images were turning out soft and although turn around times have been quick, i have never been truely happy with the results. So much so that after a lengthy email to the CPS rep, all kit had to go back in to been looked at again. Even after this was not entirely happy with the result.

I have since used Fixation to service my kit, who are an approved service centre. They were a bit more expensive than Canon themselves but i now finally have a setup that i am happy with. Customer service was also top-notch. Would recommend these guys anytime

my 17-55mm f2.8 is with fixation now.. I dropped it off last week. Will let you know how it went. They seemed quite pleasant and helpful. Estimated £85 for service, clean and calibration.

Depending on how old the camera is, I would return it to the shop and request a replacement. Otherwise, request that they return it to Canon under warrantee.

Purchased 1st September 2009, I went to the shop but they said to contact their support place who turned out to be canon support who now want it back a service center.

dont bother with those chumps. My experience with them was along the lines of 'Computer Says No'

I used AJ Johnstone in Glasgow when my 40D got the fatal 99 error code.

Ive heard people complain about them but I cant fault them, they even fast tracked my repair due to "going on holiday"

i believe all they did was send it iff to canon for repair, but had more sway when asking for it to be made a priority!

OK thanks for the input, camera is being packaged up and will be off to Canon very shortly with a covering letter describing the fault. and telling them I need it back ASAP.

I think I will look at fixation if I need anything in the future.
