Canon Servicing on Discontinued Products

Hey all, I've had a bit of a search around, but not found anything conclusive..

I bought a Canon 28-70 f2.8 L a few weeks ago and although it performs flawlessly, it a little stiff to zoom from around 35mm down to 28mm.

Glass is perfect, a small scuff on the body but for £150 I couldn't say no! It is a 2001 model, but i'd like to give it a decent service.

My question is that if I was to send it off to Canon, I can do this free of charge through my local Camera Shop, would Canon just advise me nothing can be done as it's a discontinued lens..?

I'd be without the lens for a week, Friday to Friday, could possibly get a loan from the shop for the time, but would it be worth it..?

Anyone had similar with anything else?

Thanks
Ben

It's all down to whether they have the spare parts, I'd give them a call and see the position regarding service items/parts.

Have you considered just popping the rubber zoom grip out of the way and making sure that the dust shield underneath isn't chaffed and fouling on anything....never ignore the simple things. If you need an exploded diagram / parts list for the lens then send me a PM with your email address.

Just because it's discontinued that doesn't automatically cause canon or any other brand to stop support to the product I know there are lens that are no longer supported but a lens such as the 24-70/2.8 is only recently discontinued and is also a very popular lens so I'd imagine it would be supported for a long time to come

Edit...searching proves fruitless to find a list of lens no longer supported by canon...however reports ranging from support ending a year after discontinuation right through to about 6 years so who know :( sorry I couldn't be more helpful

He said the 28-70, not 24-70. This is older than the 24-70 mark I

Whoops, yeah that's pretty old, my bad....guess I should have re-read it also really the price paid should have been a dead give away :(

Thanks for the replies people, I suppose it's just a try and see with it..

I'll PM you Canon Bob, thanks for that!

If I'd have found a 24-70 2.8 for that price I'd faint and miss out haha, thanks for searching though, I couldn't find anything either. I thought with a 12 year old lens, they may not have any parts left..

Canon support was withdrawn at the end of 2010 (along with the 17-35/2.8).....I had both up to that time.
