Canon Speedlight 600EX-RT £679 -crazy pricing

Just got my email from a UK retailer.

The just announce speedlight 600EX-RT with radio wireless triggering would cost £679 for a flashgun! Have they gone mad! :bang: :bonk: I think I rather keep my 550EX and look into the some of the main studio light companies 'offering in battery operated lights instead!

For the price of a couple of them you're not far away from Elinchrom Ranger Quadra.

That is RRP. Expect the price to come down once it has been out a few months. I never understand the hand wringing and complaining about new products when their RRP is announced. Wait and see how the price settles.

I can't see it being sub-£450 though, which when you figure in the ST-E3 controller (which probably will stay at £309), that is an expensive flash+trigger set-up. Plus, the usability has to be top notch for folk to move away from a TTL trigger setup like what PW and Phottix can offer.

The idea of radio is excellent though, especially with a decent working range like 30-metres, although I'm sure there will be some who'll find this still isn't enough.

Is the 600RT compatible as a sub-master flash flash to control other flashes like the 580II? If that's the case then it might appeal to more people but if you have to buy a 600RT every time you want to expand the system, it really does fall into the realm of only the privileged few....

EDIT: according to something I read on Syl Arena's page, legacy flashes can work in an optical slave mode of sorts.....

There's nothing here to drag me away from CLS and manual triggers....

The rrp for the 580EXII is £560, so the street price will probably be a fair bit lower, but probably still be awfully close to £500...

The 600 and ST-E3-RT is very expensive, but it's alot of kit have a read of Sly's blog he's had them for a couple of weeks now. (Oh the ST-E3-RT is going to be in the £475 range)
