Canon Standard Zoom with IS Roundup

Apologies if this has been covered recently already, but I'm looking to get a standard zoom for full-frame use with IS. Seem to be four options:

  • 28-135mm F3.5-5.6 IS
  • 24-105mm F4L IS
  • 24-70mm F4L IS
  • Tamron 24-70mm VC F2.8

The range of the first is appealing but I have a matt focus screen fitted, so F5.6 is simply too slow. I was split between the two L's then found that Tamron in the middle of them (price wise) and obviously a stop faster.

The added length and lower cost of the 24-105 seems quite compelling and I'm not fussed about the wide end issues anyway. IS is though very important to me - I'm interested to know how the Tamron VC compares to the F4L IS (which I found to be very effective).

Thanks, so my summary of things is then something like:

  • 28-135mm F3.5-5.6 IS - heavy vignetting and really only sharp at F8, light-weight and great range though, low cost
  • 24-105mm F4L IS - wild distortion at 24mm and heavy vignetting, much better from 35mm or so, low cost compared to the lens below, possibly due to be discontinued?
  • 24-70mm F4L IS - better than the 24-105 at the short end, better diaphragm design providing highly visible sun-stars, poorly implemented macro mode and high price
  • Tamron 24-70mm VC F2.8 - potentially a great lens let down by hit-and-miss AF
 
Having owned the 24-105 I wouldnt say the distortion is wild @ 24mm or the vignetting is bad.
Certainly Adobe Camera Raw does a great job tidying them up using the presets.
