Have just seen these small bird pictures taken with a Canon SX40 superzoom ("the SX40 HS offers an incredible 24-840mm equivalent to a 35x zoom lens"), presumably taken at a long focal length, and they look pretty good to me.

So this begs the question, why spend thousands of pounds on huge zoom lenses and extenders when you can get these quality images from a £330 superzoom? :shrug:

So you agree that they're quality images.

So why spend thousands on huge zoom lenses and extenders when you can take these quality images with a £330 superzoom? It's a legitimate question.

Some reasons for DSLR + expensive lens for long distance

Autofocus speed
Lower light capability (higher sensitivity and much much bigger sensor)
Optical viewfinder
Sharper images
Minimal shutter lag
etc etc etc

It's like saying you COULD get from A to B in a crappy car. It would be much less pleasant, slower, less reliable etc etc than a nice car.

I'll swap you a SX40 for your 70-300L if you want :)
 
Have you actually looked at the images, they seem very good. All you've done is made some sort of list without addressing the question.

If I'd asked the forum to spec me a camera bag or whats the best walk about lens I'd have been inundated with replies and no doubt received many of the same old responses that have swamped this forum for years, but ask something different and relevant and all I get is a couple of useless replies from the same useless poster. Pathetic.
 
Don't be so arrogant. Every point I gave you is valid and address your question. I have looked at the images, yes they are good.

Just because it is possible to get great photos with that camera doesn't make it ideal for the job. The conditions have to be right. For example the bird has to sit still for you to have enough time for slow focus and slow zoom. There has to be enough light because it's a small sensor and you want low noise. I could go on but I've wasted enough time already.

My car CAN get to 100mph, but it doesn't mean it's the best as getting to 100mph. It has to be flat and a smooth road and it takes a while. See? Just because something CAN doesn't mean it is the BEST.
