Canon Teleconverter or extender?? Confused!

Does anybody know if a Canon 2x Teleconverter is the same as an "Extender"? Jessops are selling a Canon extender and I'm looking for a teleconverter. Are these the same thing and the guy in the shop is getting his wires crossed or do Canon both? (whatever a converter is!?)

Canon only make Extenders, they are teleconverters by another name they come in 1.4x and 2x in versions II & III. However they will only work on certain Canon lenses owing to physical constraints, check before you buy.

This is what I thought, but just wanted to make sure there was a Canon product I knew nothing about before I made a fool of myself!

I did think that as I have a set, but they said this will only work with L series lenses. Does that sound about right?:shrug:

Yeah they work with L lenses over 135mm fixed focal and all the white lenses

Although as a word of caution the 2x does have quute noticable IQ deteriation. Ended up selling mine as shirts weren't good enough IMO

I have a 1.4x Sigma TC at the moment and haven't really noticed any IQ issues, but have to say I've been a bit unsure about the 2x. I'm a bit of a funny b****r when it comes to pin sharp images.

Anyone have any comparisons? This does worry me a bit.

One thing that keeps coming up on the reviews I've read are that this will not auto focus on my 5Dmk2 with a 300mm F4? Is this correct? If so, this could be the deal breaker on the 2X unfortunately. I'd struggle manually focusing on wildlife and low level aircraft. :shake:

Yup non-1 series bodies will not auto focus with a 2x on an F4, can't remember the limit, I think it's minimum aperture F5.6 for auto. You can tape the first three pins on the extender to stop it reporting to the body so it will attempt to focus but it's very hit and miss.
