Canon teleconverter?

Hi all, I have recently bought a canon 70-200 is lens but I'm after a little bit more range on it. I have a sigma x2 teleconverter at the moment but it's not that sharp with the lens. So I am thinking a canon x1.4 or x2. My question is, are they generally not that sharp with a x2?

In my experience with a Canon 300/2.8, you lose a little IQ with a 1.4x and quite a lot with a 2x. I know some people who get some great shots with the 1.4x, but it just doesn't work for me, although I am a bit picky for IQ.
Don't forget you will lose 1 stop with the 1.4x and 2 stops with a 2x. I think there can also be auto focus issues on some lenses with a 2x.
 
I use a 1.4 with my 70-200 for wildlife shots and can get pin sharp images in the right conditions. I generally use at least monopod and the fastest shutter speed I can get away with, but the 1.4 extender does not seem to degrade my images to a noticeable extend even at 100% crop.

Two people have replied about their experience with 300mm f2.8's so not really sure what relevance that has to you, however what 70-200 do you have, f2.8 or f4?
 
It's the f2.8 mk1. Like I say it's not sharp with the sigma teleconverter even using manual focus.

Sorry, I should have made it clear that my extender is the Canon 1.4 MkIII

I presume the lens is nice and sharp without the TC ?

The pictures are great without it. I do however find its not so sharp wide open on flat objects but I found that with the sigma lens.

I was offering advice based on my experience with the 1.4x & 2x TC's. Whilst not the same lens as the OP has, I felt it was valued information.
 
I've had all the combinations of all these lenses and extenders. The mk1 lens is fine in its own when tuned into the body but doesn't like extenders!

The MkII lens works superbly well with the MkIII extenders with hardly any noticeable degradation in image quality.

You pays your money........etc etc

Side Note: The 300mm f/2.8 takes both extenders extremely well but excels with the MkIII versions.

Within reason, the difference between different telecons is marginal. 90% of the image quality you get is decided by the mother lens - all the TC does is make it bigger, warts an' all.

70-200 2.8 Mk1 is well known not to be too great with TCs. Mk2 version is in a different league, no matter what TC is attached.
 
I've got a 70-200 f2.8L IS MkII and I use it with a Kenko Pro300 DGX 1.4x and a Canon MkIII 2x. There's hardly any noticable dip in quality with the Kenko and the AF speed doesn't suffer much either. With the Canon 2x the IQ drop is more noticable but still very good and the AF speed is slower but still fast enough for most subjects.

I was out at a park taking some wildlife shots yesterday and was using my 5D3 and Sigma 150-500 OS. I saw some Herons on an island in the park and decided to try my Kenko 1.4x to get the extra reach. It gave me an f9 lens and it still AF'd, albeit very slowly and that's before I've had the firmware update.
 
Oh well looks like I won't bother with one! I am getting a bit fed up of canon gear! It's so fussy!
