I have a friend with a 450D. yes some Canon owners like Nikon users :)

She wishes to take photos tethered to her laptop. what cable does she need to connect camera to laptop and what software?

IIRC there is something on the disk that came with the camera that allows this?

a simple usb cable and the eos utility thats on the disk that came wiht camera..

i presume 450d is supported for this so.. thats it.. really.. just a usb cable :)

I believe she wants a longer cable so the laptop doesn't hang off the camera :)
 
You just need a USB extension cable with a female connection at one end and male at the other. I've got a 3m cable that works perfectly to tether my 40D to Lightroom.

If you have a recent version of Lightroom it has tethering built in. Just plug a USB cable from the camera into the computer.

If you don't have Lightroom, you can download a 30-day trial and play with it.

Lightroom doesn't do live view though.
 
You may wish to also get a USB small adaptor and secure it through the strap as like the 5DII, I bet the USB out is welded to the main circuit board which snapped on one of my 5DII's even with the lightest use!!

CPS replaced the fault on a one-time-only basis and under 12 months old and issued an advisory but just be über careful not to pressure the connection or it will be ****ed!
