Canon to announce EF-S 15-60mm f/2.8 IS USM ? ?

I just noticed on another forum and few other sites there seems to be a rumour about Canon releasing an EF-S 15-60mm f/2.8 IS USM lens with better build than the 17-55 and similar to 15-85 build wise. This seems to be pure rumour mill and only reported on a couple of sites and nowhere official. An annoucement is rumoured to be for May this year. Any thoughts on this? Price? Likelyhood of it being made? How popular would it be?

It's so close in focal length to the EF-S 17-55 f2.8 that it would seem extremely unlikely. Also don't understand your comment about build quality, are you saying that the EF-S 17-85 has better build quality than the EF-S 17-55?!
 
If it's to be a replacement for the 17-55 then the extra width and length would be good.

I notice in regards to build quality it refers to the same build quality as the 15-85 not the 17-85, which makes more sense.

If it became reality then I would probably consider changing my 15-85 for it.
 
Very expensive springs to mind and can't see it tempting many 17-55mm owners who may also have something wider already, just not that bigger increase in range

Well on the basis that it would be an EF-S lens, it shouldn't be that expensive. Doesn't seem to stop the 17-55 being very expensive mind. I guess they would have to pitch it higher than the 17-55 which is already a lot, but maybe it will replace the 17-55. The main complaint with 17-55 is build quality for such an expensive lens. I don't think people would care for the extra 5mm at the long end so much, but 15 at the short is very desirable whilst maintaining a versatile standard crop zoom focal length up to 60mm, with constant f/2.8 and IS/USM/FTM. I think people would pay a premium for it if it had exceptional IQ like the 17-55 is reknown for. Saying that the new Sigma 17-50 seems to better it in center frame sharpness.

I think for people that were looking to buy the ultimate crop main zoom, i.e. upgrading the kit lens/other medium spec zooms of the same range and buying pretty much the best for crop, or buying a lens in this range for the first time and wanting something very good. I agree, for those that already have 17-55 it might not be worth "upgrading" assuming it is as good IQ wise. It depends what this new lens offers in IQ and build vs price as always, IF (a bif IF), if it gets made. :)

I'm certainly excited about it but hold little hope with such rumours about lenses. The 24-70mm replacement with IS has been rumoured for what...years now?
 
Whilst obviously just a rumour for now, I think such a lens is totally plausible.

Canon do seem to be improving the build quality of some of their newer lenses, such as the 15-85, which is built far better than the 17-85, and the new 18-55 IS II kit lens, which is optically identical to its precedessor but with better build quality.

Given many have commented on the slightly lacklustre build of the, rather expensive, 17-55, it would make sense for them to bring out a new version which is better constructed. If you take this as a given, then it's not inconceivable that they'd widen the range a little, much as they did when the 15-85 replaced the 17-85.

I'd be very interested in seeing what such a lens was like as it may well be a viable upgrade path.
 
Nice post, yeah my thoughts too. Was expecting much more ruthless replies of people telling me I was a troll bla bla bla :)
 
Not sure if this is true but I may hold of getting the 17-55 or 15-85 just in case....
 
I would totally be all over this if it's true. Exactly the focal lengths/zoom I'd like! Though guarantee it's gonna be out of my budget. How exciting!
