Canon to Nikon switch complete :)

Well, apart from a Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 the big switch is done :)

All my Canon gear has gone off to new homes where I hope their owners have as much joy with them as I did. (Yes Mike your 1Ds will be with you next week :))

So how did it all work out in the end, were there tears at bedtime?

It all went rather well actually, the 5D was probably the biggest wrench. It was my first "proper" 35mm FF camera since I used OM10's! I can distinctly remember when I started to get the images I wanted rather than the "Hit and hope" methods previously employed and when I got to the point that I could control it as a tool it was a complete revelation. So parting with it was tough but it has gone to a good home where I know it will be used and used well.

In terms of budget, I've ended up about £300 within range of my budgeted figures which on £6.5K of equipment is not at all bad. It's within 5% so that's quite acceptable for me.

I have my first proper shoots with the D700's in the next few weeks. A day shooting Boudoir with Trevor and Faye Yerbury which I am really looking forward to. They are among the world's best photographers and excel at this particular genre so I can't wait. :) And the following weekend the off camera flash is getting a run out with the lovely John Baikie up near Inverness.

really looking forward to using them in anger now but I also need to read up more on the flash systems and get that sorted before I need to use it on a job. :)
 
Glad you are happy Alison. Sounds like a good move for you. The D700 has beckoned a couple of times for me but there are some things Canon do I wouldn't want to be without...

It was very much down to others, especially you Ali that convinced me to switch....so happy.
Can't wait to see some of your shots.
 
Congratulations. The D700 is a wonderful camera. All you now is the 24-70 afs!

Not really used it yet James but fully intend shooting some really wide stuff at this years weddings.

Stick the D700 on a pole and pop it on self timer and hoist it up above the throng and bingo :)

That sounds like a fantastic setup. Hope you have a lot of fun with it!
 
Ali, never mind the 85 f1.4, you want to try the 105 f2DC.....absolutely stunning, and with the defocus ability for those wonderful dreamy backgrounds make brides leap out.

I think the 85 is next up for an upgrade, so I would hang fire if I were you....but sometimes things can be TOO sharp for portriat stuff.....seeing every blackhead and hair on the upper lip is not quite the thing.:nuts:
 
Well done Ali... As much as the thought of you going over to the dork side is a little troubling, I'm sure you'll get the best from the new gear.

Have fun with the off-camera flash stuff too... I've been at it for a couple of years now and I'm still learning stuff every day. :)

Congrats on the now final switch Ali, be sure to add some bits to the D700 owners thread when you find some niffty tricks we have all over looked.

To be honest it will be a while before I buy anything else!

The 105mm macro is a stunning portrait lens in it's own right, perhaps TOO sharp but I can always tone it down ;)

Really looking forward to my shoots in the next two weeks, got plenty more to arrange after that too :)

Time to wrangle the best out of the kit I have before I start to add to it.
 
You will do 90% of your shots with the 24-200 combo. I bet you'll have to make yourself get the 14 out....some shots will scream out for it, but they will be few and far between.
Likewise the macro, for rings and other details - and yes, portraits, but you'll get lazy and use the 70-200 at about the same focal length, like everyone else!
 
Switching is the best decision you will make photographically.........85 F1.4 is superb..... but mine sits in it's box all alone for months on end as I tend to use the 24-70 for 99% of my work.
 
i can understand the switch, but you sold the 5d classic. bad, bad, bad.

I have a particular couple of shots for the 14-24mm Simon. Shots that Uncle Bob just ain't going to be doing anytime soon. Venue shots, crowd shots, dancing shots all shot very wide.

The 105mm was bought to offer the macro facility but to give me backup to the 70-200mm. Without it I would have all my eggs in the one basket. ;)
