Looking for an ultra wide lens, I currently have a 17-40 f4 L that I'm very happy with but would like something wider. for use on my 50 & 30D bodies.

I have this thing about buying cropped sensor lenses, or I would probably rush out and get an EFS 10-22, the little voice at the back of my head keeps saying "You won't be able to use that if you get a full frame body".

I think there is a 12-24 mm Sigma that will work on FF, is it any good and does anyone have any sample images on a 1.6 crop. Not ruling out primes, the 15mm Fish-eye is appealing, but again, I can't remember seeing sample shots on a 1.6 crop.

What do you guys think would suit?

If you use a full frame lens on a crop camera, you are simply throwing away most of the image, and not gaining the benefit of lenses designed specifically for the smaller format, eg the excellent 10-22.

The 'upgrade' to full frame is just a dream that never happens for most people, and with every new camera launch, the benefits of full frame become less and less. The latest crop cameras are already a lot better than full frame was only a few years ago.

If you do go full frame, you will have no trouble selling a sought after lens like the 10-22. This place is really excellent for buying and selling - you would have a ready buyer within hours guaranteed (I sold five lenses for £1,200 in less than a day!).

Edit: while you're at it, sell the 17-40L and get an EF-S 17-55 - more range, even sharper, a full stop lower f/number, plus IS. See what I mean? ;)

I still have a FF film body that I do occasionally use and have been contemplating a 5DMkII for some time.

Can't argue with that, 5D2 is a wonderful thing

But when you do change, the cost of swapping out one or two EF-S lenses isn't much of a big deal at all and look what you're missing meanwhile - nothing else matches the IQ from that 10-22 at such short focal length. Canon can only do it with a prime, ie 14L 2.8 for the best part of £2k, and still retain quality - covering a full frame sensor with that field of view, and decent IQ, is just about the toughest optical challenge.

Better hold on the the 17-40 though ;)

if you're sticking with crop then I hear v good things about the tokina 11-16/2.8 in urbex circles

for full frame it gets tricky as anything ultrawide on full frame is a more normal wide on crop, and ultra wide crop lenses rarely fit full frame bodies (as 10mmish full frame is fairly silly and fish eye territory)
