Canon Upgrade Debate

I am currently using a 350D but due to the work I am getting, feel I should really be getting a more up to date camera. I know that pretty much any of the canon range will be an upgrade but I cant decide which way to go with limited budget.

Budget: up to £300. Main use: Portraits

Possibilities 500/550D or 30/40D.

I am guessing the 40D would be the most appropriate way to go if I can find a s/h one for a good price anyone got any advice?
 
what do you shoot most?

If you don't require speed, I'd be tempted to go with the 550D over the 40D.
 
550 for £350? doubt it ... but you could get a 40D and grip for £400 easily ..

a mint one sold on here for £400 last week with 1000 actuations
 
I have the 5omm f1.8 and a 105 f2.8. As its for portraits speed isnt important and I guess the thing in my mind is optimum image quality for the money (but not just megapixels!). I have to admit I was heading towards the 40d +grip type option but wasnt sure how much of an improvement it would realistically offer me!
 
go for the 50D without a grip .. the 40 has a digic III like you already have etc etc

at least the 50 has the new digic 4 and it has 15mp and 6.5fps etc .. bigger nicer screen too ..
 
With the best will in the world Danny he isn't gonna get a 50D for £300.

With the deals around at the moment a PX should see you able to pick up the 500D new or ex demo or a s/h 40D

Which one you go for is up to you, most will automatically say the 40D but the fact is the ISO range and high ISO noise control is better on the 500D.
You also have the higher resolution rear screen and digic 4 processor + HD video and many other features, remember the 400D is the 40D's little brother, the 500D is the 50D's little brother.

I honestly don't think you would be disappointed and of course you have the warranty should things go wrong.

Your lenses are fine for what you want to shoot at present so the body upgrade seems sensible to me.

The 50D is specced at 6.3fps, exactly the same as what the 40D actually achieved (despite being specced at 6.5). The newer processor doesn't actually give you any speed advantage because it's handling larger files!

The screen in no bigger on the 50D, just higher res. This is aesthetically nicer, but it doesn't really provide any advantage, you still have to zoom in to check focus, it just looks a little sharper.
 
I have recently bought a 500D I was thinking of getting a used 40D as I think the 40D is a real classic & stunning camera as I have had one before.

The 500D is nice and light and it performes really well. The rear screen and low weight are the reasons I decided on the 500D. The rear screen is ideal for Live View shooting as the res is so good. I can't wait for better weather so I can play with it more.
 
40D would be what I was looking for out of that list. might as well keep the 350D than go to another xxxD
 
Can I suggest saving up a little more and grabbing a 5D mk1? For portrait work with your lens selection it would be superb. I know its a big cost jump but for your kind of work it would be superb!
