Canon vs Sigma

I need a bit of advise. I am looking to upgrade my glass and purchase a 24-70mm lens. I am a Canon man so I have been looking at the Canon 24-70 EF f/2.8 L which costs around £1000 but since looking I have seen the Sigma version for almost half the price.

Is there much of a difference between these two lenses? :help:

The newer HSM version is just OK on the small sensors http://www.photozone.de/nikon--nikkor-aps-c-lens-tests/475-sigma_ex_2470_28_hsm_dx?start=1 if you get one that focuses properly.

Seems to me to work pretty damned well on a x1.3 in some fair testing circumstances:

I've got the siggy 24-70 f2.8 on a Canon 7d and it works really well. I also have a Canon 24-70 f4 on a Canon 5d2 which is an excellent lens - I did look at getting the 2.8 version but decided against it.

Are you sure you've got a 24-70mm f4, not sure that lens exists. I know of a 24-70mm f3.5-4.5 or a 24-85mm f3.5-4.5 or the 24-105mm f4

Some reviews of the sigma 24-70mm f2.8 if ex dg hsm lens

On a crop I'd just get the Tamron 17-50mm non VC at around £230 used or a Canon 17-55mm 2.8 IS - THE general use lens to have for a 1.6 crop.
24-70 is more for 1.0 and 1.3 crop cameras (1D, 1Ds, 5d).

If you want range though think about the 24-105mm (Canon) F4, £550 ish used, highly regarded too. Do you really need 2.8? I'd also get a 0mm 1.8 if you haven't already, ideal for portraits where a 2.8 or 4.0 lens won't cut it. (sometimes I think to shoot at sub 2.8).

One thing to consider aswell is that Canon has just annouced a new version of the 24-70 2.8, while that maybe out of your price range I'm guessing its going to mean the used price of the old 24-70 goes down a bit as more come on the market.

I'm not so sure, the new one is at least double the cost I think? Might knockm £50 off the used price of a mkI but I can't see them dropping much.

Have you thought about a used lens. Ffordes, Mifsuds, Mpb photographic, digital depot, camtech, park camera's or the forums might have some.

Ffordes has a mint (used) one going for £829.00
Mifsuds for £849.00
