Hi there peeps, thinking of upgrading soon to a 50d, but im in two minds wether to sell all my gear and get a 50d+17-85mm bundle or sell most of my kit and just get the 50d body only and use my tamron 17-50mm 2.8 on it, as the title states which is better the tamron 17-50 2.8 or the canon 17-85mm IS?

Cheers andy....

I'd go for the tamron every time. The constant f/2,8 is much more useful to me than the extra length. I think you'd really notice the step down!

the Canon 17-85 IS is a great lens, I have not tried the Tameron one, with the IS remember you are getting about 2-3 stops

it is not great, it is only OK. IS is the only good thing about it. The sharpness is not outstanding but not bad; the contrast and colour are awful; LOADS of CA; and it has bad distortions at 17-24mm. In the ideal world it should cost £100 for what it does, not the ridiculous money canon charges for it.

And it is Tamron not "Tameron".

But that wont help focusing or your ability to isolate a subject.

Or shutter speed for moving subjects..... If you want the best of both worlds, go for the new tamron with VC (what tamron call IS). Or if you REALLY need a bit more range go for the sigma 17-70. Just my opinions though, I have the tamron and think it's awesome

So you guys saying keep the tamron and just buy the the canon 50d body.....

Yes, it is the best and the cheapest option. I misread the bit you already had it.

i've got the 17-85 (came with a 40d kit) and i never use it, although it is quite solid. i'd go with the tamron. 2.8 will give you a lot more joy from being able to isolate your background. are you sure you need a 50d? might be able to get a good deal on a used 40...

ive been looking at the 40d to, but from what people have said on here, if ive got the extra cash go for the 50d:shrug:, is there much that separates them?

First page of this review shows most of the changes between 40D/50D.

If it were my money I'd go for the 50D and the Tamron, I've used the Canon 17-85 and wasn't impressed in terms of sharpness/contrast especially for the price.

In fact I may be upgrading to the 50D/Tamron combo myself in the not too distant future.
